On the April 19th, draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. announced plans for his eventual retirement on ESPN's NFL Live broadcast. His announcement shocked the Pro Football world.

While sparring with fellow draft analyst Todd McShay, Kiper made the following declaration: "If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I'm done. That's it. I'm out."

McShay asked the following question: "What is your time frame, Mel? When do we make that assessment?"

Kiper answered "I want eight years."

McShay countered, "It will only take three years, Mel. We can tell inside three years."

Kiper replied, "I want eight."

Kiper should've retired after Clausen's first 8 games.

Dude was the worst QB I've seen who had any sort of expectations coming in.

I didn't realize he was doing draft evaluations for that long.

I can't believe Kiper has lasted this long after he got owned and exposed at the 1994 NFL draft.

But it turns out Kiper was the first Skip Bayless...somebody with no credentials who can just say anything about any player.

Kiper loves him some ND QBs. He said as much on the radio last week while discussing Kizer, IIRC.

I'm pretty sure hindsight has been much kinder to Mel Kiper than it has Bill Tobin with respect to Dilfer/Trev Alberts.

A lot of teams thought Leaf was the top prospect in 1998.

Chris Simms would have taken that "worst" title except for that career game against the Saints I believe...
