Julio Urias is making his first major league start tonight and is the first teenager to start a major league game since felix hernandez back in 2005. here is the track record for teenagers in their major league debuts
Felix Hernandez on August 4, 2005 against Detroit:
5 innings
1 earned run
3 hits
4 strikeouts
2 walks
decent start
Todd Van Poppel on September 11, 1991 against the White Sox
4.2 innings pitched
5 earned runs
7 hits
6 strikeouts
2 walks
struck out a lot of batters but was a pretty bad start
Wilson Alvarez on July 24, 1989 against Toronto:
was pulled before he could make an out. gave up 3 earned runs on 3 hits and two homers. not great
Ed Correra on October 6, 1985 against Seattle:
5 innings pitched
2 earned runs
4 hits
6 strikeouts
6 walks
not his first professional appearance as he made 4 appearances coming out of the pen prior but it was his first start. decent start even though he walked a bunch
Dwight Gooden on April 7, 1984 against Houston:
5 innings pitched
1 earned run
3 hits
5 strikeouts
2 walks
great start and great rookie year
Jose Rijo on April 5, 1984 vs Kansas City
5 innings pitched
1 earned run
4 hits
5 strikeouts
2 walks
made the start as an 18 year old and threw a good game
Ed Nunez on April 7, 1982 against Minnesota
3.1 innings pitched
1 earned run
4 hits
1 strikeout
2 walks
made the start as an 18 year old. didnt strike people out and gave up some hits but still limited the damage to only one earned run. thats an ok game
so there are the first starts for teenage pitchers since 1980. felix hernandez, dwight gooden, jose rijo, ed nunez, and ed correa had quality, or at least serviceable, starts. does anyone else find it surprising that in the admittingly small sample size, that there has been some success from 19 and 18 year old pitchers making their first start ever?

You never know how old those Latins really are. Like the Little League World Series team a few years ago that had a bunch of 16 and 17 year olds playing. This dude may be 23 for all we know.

Wow I did not realize Wilson Alvarez started as a teenager. I always remember him as the doughy southpaw from the White Sox.

You call Felix Hernandez's start decent, but Doc Gooden's start great. They statistically had the same game, albeit Gooden had one more strikeout.
You're blinded by perceived greatness.

Not at all. Without pro scouting reports hitters only have a small clue what to expect. Chi Chi Gonzalez rocked everyone last year for the Rangers, but after lineups saw hime once, they keyed on him the next time and he got shelled.
The guy who pitcher for the LAA earlier this week against Texas did the exact same thing. First time pitching against us and he made us look like little leaguers.

Twenty days after pitching his last high school game, David Clyde won his first ever Major League start before over 35,000 fans in Arlington Stadium, the first sellout in stadium history.[1] After a poor start in which he walked the first two batters he faced, he settled down, pitched five innings, giving up only one hit (a home run to Mike Adams) while striking out eight batters in a 4–3 victory over the Minnesota Twins.[4][5] Clyde later called it his most memorable game in his Major League career.[6]

Yes, when compared to when Bob Feller who was pitching in the All-Star game as a teen ager

I don't see how he'd gonna turn it around

I mean, it's kinda what I expected. Had his moments but he also got hit. Doesn't help that he had a seeing eye 2 out single drive in 2 runs
