ProFootballTalk? @ProFootballTalk Report: Richard Smith won't return as Falcons defensive coordinator

quote:

The report said Smith could end up taking another job on staff but won’t be back as coordinator after the Falcons’ Super Bowl meltdown. It also said Falcons defensive line coach Bryan Cox will be dismissed.

Smith has been with the team for two seasons, and Cox has been with the team for the last three seasons.
quote:

These moves mean the Falcons will follow their Super Bowl appearance with significant staff changes on both sides of the ball. Kyle Shanahan was hired as head coach of the 49ers after two years as offensive coordinator, and the Falcons officially announced Steve Sarkisian as his replacement on Tuesday. Per multiple reports, quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur will also leave the team to become offensive coordinator with the Rams.

Agreed

Any defense will crumble if the opposing team has 90 plays

Did Atlanta even have 50 total plays?

Can't believe they fired Bryan Cox. The d-line played awesome for the most part in that game.

Really hope Georgia doesn't pick him up.

If Shanahan hadn't taken the 49ers job, he should've been let go before Smith, IMO.

Not running the ball in the fourth quarter, especially in that situation, is a fireable offense.

you'd shoot yourself in the foot to spite your face? He had some terrible calls, but they wouldn't be stupid enough to let go of an excellent asset. The coaches who were fired weren't fired bc of just the Super Bowl.

Doesn't this mean Quinn wanted them gone?

He's a defensive coach you'd think he'd have final say

That is unreal

Any defense would have fallen apart under those circumstances. Their D-line played out of their minds.

Imploding? Come on man you are better than this. I know you are biased, but stop being such a shite

I know, but when you consider how young they are on defense which had some key players out, they played way better than most expected through the entire playoff run.

Shanny did a great job all season and he is a key reason why they played in the game to begin with, but when it came down to simply just trying to put the game away in the biggest game of his career, he couldn't even make common sense calls.

Letting the DC go probably won't be a huge loss for ATL since it's basically Quinn's defense anyway. The Cox firing is surprising though. Thought the DL, while not anything amazing, played much better this year.

No way in hell Atlanta even makes it to the super bowl without Shanahan

Yes he goofed. But he got them there the offense was all-time great, and he finally put together a great scheme for Ryan. Losing him is going to hurt a lot

Yes. D-line was good, especially Grady Jarret in the Super Bowl

Beasley was meh in the playoffs, don't think he had a sack

That's a good question. I'm pretty sure Matt Ryan had less than 25 throws. Doubt they had much more running plays than 25

93-46 in total plays.

Even with the Falcons pass happy offense in the fourth quarter, Brady still finished with 40 more pass attempts than Ryan. That is unreal.

I hope they still draft Cox's son. It wasn't the defense that blew it...

Didn't Brian Cox use to lose his shite all the time and get fined when he played?

Hard to believe he became a coach.

Very odd knee jerk reaction. The defense wasn't the problem, they were just gassed in the 4th quarter and OT.

The Falcons ran the ball 5 times after they went up 28-3. That's how to all time choke. Kyle gets promoted
