ESPN is getting back into broadcasting professional hockey after landing the U.S. rights for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
The NHL and NHL Players' Association, who are overseeing the eight-team international tournament, jointly announced the decision Wednesday. ESPN was selected ahead of NBC Sports Group, which is in the midst of a 10-year contract to broadcast NHL regular-season and playoff games through 2020-21.
ESPN was the NHL's U.S. broadcaster from 1992 through the league's lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said ESPN was selected after NBC executives said they could encounter scheduling conflicts to broadcast the tournament which will be held in Toronto, and run from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1.
Rogers Sportsnet and French-language TVA Sports were awarded the Canadian broadcasting rights.

I guess that means they will start acknowledging the existence of the sport again.

What do they have that could possibly conflict? Ivy League football? The LPGA? Craftsman Truck Series?

If they put the same effort and bring the same type of talent they did for the world cup I will watch.
It is still wrong that Fox has the next two world cups.

Hopefully they can fit it in with the new found cricket love.

The best part about this is the return of the greatest sports intro of all time (imo):

there is no need for them to frick it up by modernizing it, its the perfect theme to watch hockey.

Seriously, if they change it, I'm not gonna be happy, it's stood the test of time (and they still occasionally use it when they bring in Melrose on SC and I love it).

That's what I was thinking. Maybe NHL wanted the game on broadcast stations like NBC or ABC, not NBCSports and ESPN.

Lets not go too crazy. They only won the TV rights for the World Cup not the league rights itself. I wish the league would go back to ESPN just to get National Hockey Night back. I can only handle Mike Emrick in little bits.
