They should forward the bill to the Rose Bowl

This idea is universally hated and its costing College Football's biggest promoter millions. The bowl/playoff commissioners are idiots

So I guess ESPN might still suffer despite the fact that the contract has been signed long in advance already.

If the Rose Bowl and Sugar wont move from the 1st, just play the playoff on the 2nd. Not NYE. It doesnt seem that complicated

Well next year if it isn't moved, I can only assume that they will not be charging as much for air time. They could charge a base price and after viewership numbers come out charge advertisers an additional premium for anything above the estimated base.

If we're going to cater to the Rose & Sugar, then let's bite the bullet and just have them permanent hosts for the semi-final games. I have no problem with that.

Just incredible how they are sticking their heads in the sand.

I think I read that 4 of the next 5 years have the same schedule as this year.

The hold up for playing it on the 2nd some years will be NFL games.

But also, it just seems like they don't want to play them on the 2nd, for what ever reason.

I don't understand why they don't draw these games out more.

For example:

Peach on New Year's Eve
Rose/Sugar New Year's Day (when they're the playoff)
Orange Bowl on Jan. 2
Fiesta Bowl on Jan 3

Have as many games in prime time as possible. That's what they used to do with the BCS Bowls.

Correct, because only years when the Sugar/Rose bowls are the playoff sites will the playoff be on New Year's Day (as of now).

You are right, they should have played it on Jan 2nd.

Compare these numbers-
Fiesta Bowl which had Notre Dame & Ohio State drew 9 million viewers.

On Jan 2, Arkansas & Kansas St drew 7 million viewers. The Alamo Bowl which followed was 31-0 at half and had 7.5 million.

If they are going to have a "New Year's Six" then the playoff games need to be the culmination of the 6 games. You can't just put the playoff games on NYE, surround them with awful games, and then proclaim that they are going to change the dynamic of the sport. Its awful. If not, then you're right they need to do what the BCS did and just have the games in primetime the days leading up to the Championship game. The current format just feels so disjointed. The Cactus Bowl had a better timeslot than the Peach Bowl.

I see no reason why they didn't want to move them to 2nd. Maybe it was pure logistics of getting stuff and allowing the teams to have adequate practice time but that is just a shot in the dark.

I feel like this playoff schedule is going to set college football back for a while. They'll eventually fix it, but this looks like a poor future in the short term.

The playoff games simply are not as intriguing as we hoped because there's an oversaturation of meaningless games around them. Then there's an 11 day waiting period between the playoff and the championship. Just too much dead space to start looking towards other things.

I should have connected the dots there

I don't mind the semis being on NYE because I don't really enjoy NYE, but for many, this shite is a problem. I can't believe the powers at be are ok with this.

I see what you're saying, but I would argue they don't really need to be a culmination because there is still a title game to follow 10 days later. That will always be the last game.

I'm on board with that, but my point is if we are going to shove 6 major bowls into NYE and NYD, then the 4 other games should be a build up to the Playoff Games...as it was last year.

Exactly. The CFP semi-final games should be after New Year's Day.

Those three games should be the last three games of the college football season. Have one semi-final game in primetime on one night, and then have another in primetime on the next night. Play the national title game 11-14 days later.

For instance, just using January 2017 as an example. The New Year's Six will be on Sunday, January 1. And then you have the first semi-final game on Monday, January 2. Tuesday, January 3 will feature the next game. And then have the national title game on Tuesday, January 17.

Gotcha gotcha. Yes, I agree.

Honestly, it seems like some is this is just driven by a branding issue. They branded these games as the "New Year's Six," so it's almost like that's why they're trying to cram them all in to NYE and NYD. Who really cares, though?
