ESPN: NFL crusaded against science (concussion-related)

LINK
quote:

The National Football League conducted a two-decade campaign to deny a growing body of scientific research that showed a link between playing football and brain damage, according to excerpts from a new book co-authored by a pair of ESPN investigative reporters.

Excerpts published Wednesday by ESPN The Magazine and Sports Illustrated from the book, "League of Denial: The NFL, Concussions and the Battle for Truth," report that the NFL used its power and resources to discredit independent scientists and their work; that the league cited research data that minimized the dangers of concussions while emphasizing the league's own flawed research; and that league executives employed an aggressive public relations strategy designed to keep the public unaware of what league executives really knew about the effects of playing the game.

What comes of this?

Must be liberal-funded scientists who have to side with the liberal agenda so they can keep receiving liberal money.

They may be putting out a new story but this is fairly old news.

Not trustworthy sources. Not reading further.

NFL may very well be guilty, but I'll have to find out elsewhere if I'm to take the story seriously.

What makes them any less trustworthy than other sources?

The NFL has already settled their lawsuit with the former players. Probably nothing.

This is all information that would have likely come out at trial if the case had actually gone to trial.

The only way the NFL would have a case against SI or ESPN is if they can prove that this isn't true. But it probably is true so nothing happens.

The only other way I could see something coming from this is if by ESPN publishing these excerpts of this book they are in breach of their contract with the NFL. But you would need to know what is in their contract with the NFL which isn't going to happen.

More moms not letting their middle schoolers play football, leading to fewer high schoolers, fewer college players, and so forth. One more nail in the coffin of football as a viable sport a decade or so in the future.

Nothing is going to happen to football in the next decade that will diminish it as a "viable sport."

If you are stupid enough to believe that a sport as absolutely brutal as football doesn't have injury side effects, that is your fault.

It's like having sex without a condom with a prostitute, and wondering how you got aids.
