ESPN Close To A Deal With The USTA To Move The U.S. Open Exclusively To Cable

quote:

For the first time in more than four decades the U.S. Open tennis tournament semifinals and finals could be moving to a new TV home. ESPN is close to a deal to obtain all rights to the N.Y.-based tournament beginning in '15, according to several sources. CBS has broadcast the tournament every year since '68. Nothing has been finalized yet, as CBS is still in contact with the USTA and hopeful of keeping a piece of the tournament. But several sources have said that ESPN and the USTA have agreed on a framework that would have ESPN pay an average of more than $60M per year for exclusive access to the tournament, representing around a 50% increase in the average annual value of the contract.

Good. That way CBS can air SEC games the first 2 weeks of the season.

perhaps

but it could also be part of their deal that they dont get access to those two first weeks b/c they never anticipated losing the US Open.

CBS also had to forego the afternoon NFL game on Sunday, so they will be just fine when they get that back.

I have no problem with ESPN's tennis coverage. A lot of tennis fans hate Fowler, but I think you need a commoner play by play guy to relate to the masses. Tirico does a fantastic job on US Open. As long as Johnny Mac still gets to do his thing, it's fine. I just hope they don't put everything on the ESPN Ocho and show college football in that second week/weekend of the tournament.

I think he does quite well. I love the questions he asks P-Mac or Cahill when they get too tennisspeak-y.
