I have to be honest I never really heard much about them before this . Really enjoyed the documentary but considering I was born in Louisiana I wouldn't put these guys on the top of the totem pole . I appreciate what they did for sports radio but I don't care much for New York sports and New York in general .

I did always hear people talk about mad dog sports radio on xm.

Honestly, I never heard of them until a couple of years ago. I got XM radio a couple of years ago and started listening to Russo on MDSR.

Had they not been in New York would they wouldn't have been this popular. Is that a safe assumption?

Had they not been in New York and pioneered sports radio as you know it today, they wouldn't have been this popular.

They are a big deal, at least from an influence standpoint.

Mike Francesa is one of the worst in hindsight.

For some reason they were huge. Sort of like the Howard Stern rise of sports talk radio.

If you liked baseball and especially loved the Yankees they were great. They could talk real baseball...I will give them that.

But Mike just got worse. It really was just a sports talk show for baseball guys.

But - I'm sure the South hated them because they knew nothing about college football.

I agree but those are 2 different things. Influential and all around the best.

Fair enough. They're not the best sports talk show hosts of all time, but being the first to pull it off at their level is pretty impressive.

No one in the South had ever heard of them because it was a NY show. I only know of Russo because of seven years on satellite radio.

and the guys from the Ticket aren't because they are in Dallas

They developed the "sports talk that talks about other stuff" concept which is a lot less boring than droning on about games.

ESPN is about 99% trash programming. Never heard of these people and couldn't care less.

I hated Russo the first few months after I saw him on High Heat. Despised the screaming.

He's grown on me. The guy is a baseball encyclopedia. I enjoy his show now

Mad Dog has a very good radio show on XM radio. Although he talks too much baseball (not just Yankees, he's actually a Baseball Giants fan), he will cover all sports and including a fair amount of college football. That is something you might not expect from a NYC based show.
He does have that New York accent, calling everyone "pal", etc. but it is still a very good show. I recommend.

Mad Dog is a spaz, but he is sort of the last link to prior eras from his personal viewing standpoint and to old school sports journalism (he always has on the big time print guys who are getting up there in age).

I don't know much about the old New York show with Francesa, but many people say it is the blueprint for modern sports radio. Chris is good in small doses on his own satellite network.

Well, our country's population is heavily concentrated on the eastern seaboard and NYC is the most important city in the world.

And success there influences what radio GM's (or their corporate bosses) are willing to try all over the country.

The 30/30 idea was stolen from Stu Gotz
