I'm talking about a competitive edge where there is an animosity between the teams.

Again, great games/compelling results do this just fine. There's no need for the extracurricular retribution over harmless showboating to create a competitive edge.

Ok. What do you think would increase animosity between the teams: more showboating or less showboating?

More obviously. But the showboating doesn't build animosity on it's own. The retribution rachets it up to levels that showboating alone can't bring it to.

If a player pimps a homerun and knows there's no chance of retribution because bean balls are outlawed, how does that build animosity between teams?

On the one hand, you're wrong. On the other hand, you're right. If there weren't the unwritten rules, we wouldn't get to see pussies lose their shite over bat flips.

That's always entertaining.

Does the animosity automatically go away if there's no chance of retribution with a fastball? I don't think so. I think it gets ratcheted up. It's still going to piss off the other team.

I disagree with this. Great/competitive games are all that's needed for the diehard/attentive fans.

But this shite grabs the attention of the casual fans.

I guess then you are weighing the pros and cons of alienating diehards who want to get rid of it or the drive by fans that want to see some blood (figurative blood).

The funny thing is how many people who never even likely played college baseball are trying to explain how the crap works w/ pitchers and showboating.

Bryce Harper, and what, like a handful of other people have said they wished it would stop? So like 1% of the sport's population. Pretty clear the sport and the athletes playing it prefer to police the game themselves than a bunch of idiots in an office or on a message board.

There is a big difference between hitting a guy on purpose for pimping a home run and hitting a guy on purpose after he takes out your SS on a dirty slide or something.

Hitting someone on purpose after they showboat a home run is extremely dumb and should be dealt with harshly

But then it doesn't really come out in the game... Maybe they say a few things in the post game, but people aren't paying too much attention to that unless something happened in game.

How many times has Boston thrown at machado? So you're cool w/ that, but think there is something wrong W/ Texas throwing at Bautista a total of one time that hit him in the thigh?

That makes a lot of sense.

It's not so much the flip. He doesn't do it out of joy or fun. He looks angry and hostile, which makes him come across as a total a-hole.

The flip last night was absurd and he deserved another punch in the face. Cutting the lead to 8-4 in the 8th after Freeman probably got his wrist broken earlier? Are you kidding me? Blue Jays are a bunch of shitbags.

BTW, this is the GOAT bat flip:

For those who don't know the story, that is Tom Lawless on Game 4 of the 1987 World Series. He hit if off of Frank Viola (eventual World Series MVP and 1988 Cy Young winner) in the 4th inning to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Lawless was a scrub, subbing that day for the injured Terry Pendleton. Lawless hit .080 in 1987. He had hit 1 career HR at that point and finished his career with 2 (plus this one).

I did not say that. I'm definitely not cool with a team continuing to throw at someone repeatedly like they did. Machado also hit the base with his cleat and was standing over Pedroia apologizing and helping him.

A slide like Utley's on Tejada, especially after MLB dropped the suspension? Yes, I don't have a problem with a Mets pitcher hitting him in the back. That was vicious, dirty and has basically ended his career

This is why baseball is a dying sport. A guy has just an inkling of showmanship, and everyone loses their minds. I absolutely despise the "unwritten rules" of baseball that disallow fun.

If I played MLB baseball, I'd constantly be pumping up the crowd after home runs or when I'm on D and need some intensity in the building.

Bryce Harper had it right.

Freddie Freeman is always in the mix

Not reading this whole thread, but Freeman was already out of the game because he got hit in the hand by a pitch. Freeman was the seventh batter hit by the Jays in less than three games. Tensions were already high when Bautista hit his homer due to all the hit batters (especially Freeman) and Kevin Pillar being a giant bitch about striking out the inning prior and calling the Braves pitcher a fa**ot.

On the pitcher side, hopefully Julio goes Scott Sullivan on some Jays tonight.

Stopped reading here. Your opinion on baseball is completely irrelevant if you're gonna talk out your arse.

A bunch of loud nouth pussies in this thread.

It's fricking baseball... if you don't like a bat flip, then don't throw him a pitch he can bash over the fence... and I LOVE how the PzuNK Rangers handled their so called revenge....

Fact he abused your pitcher in a critical game at home in a very important point of a fricking playoff game and reacted fine....

Get the frick over it you overpaid not worth a shite franchise......
