In other words, have the Group 5 break off into their own division basically.

This way the P5 is left in their own division, and the G5 can finally compete for a championship. I say this because the likelihood of a G5 team ever making it into the playoffs and winning would take something even crazier than 2007. W. Michigan is 12-0 and isn't even in the discussion.

This could be taken further by having the P5 focus on scheduling each other with no more G5 or FCS opponents. If people want better games, better schedules, and less controversy with regard to the postseason, I think this is a potentially good route.

I think the inevitable 8 team playoff will guarantee A G5 team will make the playoff most years. Boise/Houston would have been in for sure... WMU this year and UCF and the like I don't know.

The P5 teams really don't want those small teams in their playoff though. Nothing but risk in losing, no credit for a win.

I could see a team like Boise or Houston making it in, but would they realistically have the horses to hang with the P5? Maybe, seeing as how weirder things have happened.

Definitely true as far as I can tell.

the argument has always been that they can get up for one game but don't have the depth to bring it every week. An 8 team playoff means 3 games, so it would test that theory.

They'd probably run into issues scheduling P5 teams as well. Really they need a signature P5 win to get in the discussion.. P5 teams may just start boxing them out.

the ones who can hang in P5 conferences are already a part of P5 conferences now...

P5 = Power 5 conferences

What does G5 stand for? Grundle 5 conferences?

G5 cannot separate because the rely on the money games at P5 schools to balance the budget. Likewise the P5 schools like to buy home games in order to make more money and there is a huge financial impact that home games have on the local community. It's a symbiotic relationship that none of us fans like but exists out of necessity.

No, G5 really doesn't gain much from that.

You do realize that many of these schools were in division 2 just 10 years ago and made the step up. There is less money to be made in a lessor division. They get to play in bowls and get more national exposure for their school in Division 1. Western Michigan is not under the allusion that they are national championship quality.

No.
I'm sure W Michigan will enjoy the Cotton Bowl a lot more than playing for some "Championship."
Any team that wants to join FCS is free to do so and play for a championship.

That's ridiculous, unless you are counting only the 25 or so real power programs.
Otherwise, the idea that teams in P5 leagues are by definition "power programs" is a joke.

This is how high school football works in La.

And private school people hate it

So I'll allow it

This is going to sound like the a-hole thing to say, but why should the P5 schools care? I doubt they would go broke separated from the P5 anyway.

One of the reasons I wanted to start this thread is we often see complaints about schedule strength, or terrible games in general. However, I haven't really seen many solutions proposed with regard to that.

It's not impossible. WMU just didn't have the schedule this year and, frankly, isn't good enough.

A Boise team that wins a strong MWC and, for argument's sake, beats USC and UW OOC would be in the discussion in a year like this.

ETA: hell even this year's Houston team with its schedule, had it gone undefeated, would be in the discussion.

They gain a more competitive division and a legitimate chance to win a championship. I would say that's a solid deal for them. Otherwise, their ceiling is a NY6 bowl barring a miracle year.

I'm aware there is less money in a lesser division. However, it's not like they would go broke in a division to themselves. I'm even okay with allowing them in bowl games for crossover with the P5 if they separated seeing as how bowls are just glorified exhibition matches.

While W. Michigan doesn't likely think they can play for a title, that isn't the point. The point is they aren't even in the discussion.

While true that a team like Boise would be in the discussion, would they make it in? Even this season, let's say for discussion sake that Houston was undefeated. Do you think they even get in?
