Does anyone remember 1991 Philly Eagles defense?

When it comes to talking about the best D, we hear '85Bears, 2000 Ravens. But football outsiders has '91 Eagles with the best defensive DVOA, meaning they are the best D of all time.
I'm not old enough to have watched them so I did a bit of research.
Over all the team finished 10-6 and missed the post season(they had 5 different starting QBs)
-1991 D put up the 2nd best numbers against the run and pass in the history of NFL.
-allow 35 yds/game less than 85 bears(some say eagles played in a tougher division)
-fewest yds allow against run and pass that year. Led league in sacks(54), fum recoveries(37), turnovers forced (63).
Some say '91 eagles don't get mention when best D conversation comes up because they didn't win the Super Bowl. But they say if you just focus on the D, '91 eagles was clearly the best.
So just wondering if anyone remembers watching this unit. We're they the best?

They allowed 15.2 PPG, which is waaaaaaay down the list of great defenses even among those since the rules changes of the late-70s. In fact it was only 5th best in the league THAT SEASON.

vaguely.
the had a awesome combo of Reggie White,Clyde Simmons and Jerome Brown on the D-line.
but Rich Kotite was the head coach.
wasn't Jim McMahon one of the Qb's? That division was the best back in that time though.

I think with 5 different starting QBs, some of that has to be defensive TDs or short field TDs. Football outsiders is pretty legit. They are not attention seeking site like ESPN.

But Bud Carson was responsible for the D. I think he's the same guy that coached Steel Curtain.

To their credit, the 1991 NFC East might have been the best division ever. The Redskins were 14-2 and won the SB, a team many consider one of the best ever. The Cowbous were 12-4 and would win three of the next four SBs. The Eagles were 10-6, and the Giants (the defending SB champs) were 8-8 and most of their losses were within the division.
The 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995 SB champs all played in that division. Crazy.

I was young, but I remember them being really good and I was a fan of Seth Joyner. They definitely aren't at the forefront of my mind as an all-time great D, but those stats are pretty remarkable.

Just watched them on YouTube beat the Oilers in the Dome on Monday Night Football. McMahon started. Cunningham was injured.

i guess he was. The only other memorable player from the Eagles D back then was Andre Waters.
I remember they beat the Saints at the Superdome the next year after Jerome Brown had passed away.
They ended up playing the Cowboys the next week and lost real bad so I remember not feeling as bad about the Saints losing to them.

Eric Allen was pretty good.

yep, I think he picked off Hebert when they beat the Saints...ran it back for a score.
Allen played for the Saints later on when Ditka was the coach I think

May not go as best, but they were fun as hell to watch.
Was able to see them 2 years prior give ole Troy Aikman about 3-5 concussions in one game, in the old Texas Stadium

You can't be considered an all-time great defense without being the #1 scoring defense period. The '76 Steelers, '85 Bears, '00 Ravens, '02 Bucs and '13 Seahawks all finished #1 in scoring D. The '91 Eagles finished fifth. They aren't even in the conversation with those other defenses.

That defense was better than it gets credit for because they had NO help from their offense for most of the season.
Here's the box score from when the Saints played them that year. They held the Saints to 13 points despite SIX turnovers.

how many of those teams went through 5 QB's in a season like the Eagles did that year?
and it did in the best division in all of football.

Frankly not all things are weighted equally.
Eagles are still legit, but they had old rules in their favor.
Seahawks are probably the best ever given their hardship.
The 70's Steelers - they could mug receivers and just like the great '76 Raiders defense when they tackled receivers at the line of scrimmage...nobody ran routes...they were all on the ground.
The game has never been more difficult to defend.
2013 Seahawks (with all the handicaps the zebras and Goodell have given the D) were truly special.
Goodell had his poster-child Denver Broncos and the most points they scored in the history of the NFL - even more than the greatest show on turf....and it was Arena ball love-fest for Manning that year.
And Seahawks crushed them...and crushed everyone that year.
Far more impressive than the Bears or Ravens and their crap opponents in the SB.
Seahawks allowed 14 points a game when the Arena ball league average was 26 points.
The limited QBs to 5 yards per pass attempt when the worst team in the league...averaged 6 yards per pass attempt.
It's never been more difficult to be on D...and the Hawks were probably the best ever given all the crap they've had to endure with Goodell and flags.
Even Ozzie Newsome (GM of 2000 Ravens) said, the 2013 Seahawks were the best D he's ever seen because back in the day defenses could beat up receivers.
If you can have stats like the 70's Raiders or Steelers in today's game - you are way better than they were.
The game is that much more difficult...hell, you can't even hit Qbs anymore - back then you could rip their helmet off - literally.

First defense since '85 Bears to lead the NFL in total defense, points allowed, and interceptions.
Held opposing QBs to a passer rating of 48.4
