Bill Russell

Five-time NBA Most Valuable Player and a twelve-time All-Star, he was the centerpiece of the Celtics dynasty, winning eleven NBA championships during his thirteen-year career. Along with Henri Richard of the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens, Russell holds the record for the most championships won by an athlete in a North American sports league. Before his professional career, Russell led the University of San Francisco to two consecutive NCAA championships (1955, 1956). He also won a gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics as captain of the U.S. national basketball team.[1]

Russell won MVP the same season Wilt average 50 points and 26 rebounds.
That same season Oscar averaged a triple double.
Russell was better and you have Oscar and Wilt in your pantheon.
dump Timmie. Insert Russell.

fully believe Lebron will be #2 all time by the time he is done.

Bron has been #2 for a while now, IMO.

He'd also have to do basically impossible things for the next 5 years to be #1.

Weird place to be in.

Yes. Without a doubt. The consistent greatness he displayed throughout his career is amazing.

No... He's also not a PF, he's a Center who didn't want to be labeled a center. And as far as centers go.. He's about the 5 or 6th best.

This is kind of a moot argument, because Duncan played with shitty centers once Robinson retired. Duncan won multiple championships with Rasho Nesterovic and Nazr Mohammed as starting centers. The Spurs were the first NBA team to openly mock the idea of set positions in basketball. They would run sets with Duncan and four wings.

Also, look at Duncan's playoff statistics for a better metric of how much more consistent he was than any other big man of his generation. Also, Duncan's career defensive win shares are second only to Bill Russell. Duncan was the best defensive player of his generation, bar none.

But yes continue to spout off PPG and PER, a statistic that is heavily weighted towards offensive-only players.

I love how a purely opinion based topic turns into a bitch fest bc people think their opinion is fact. I take Lebron over Bird even though Lebron is probably the biggest crybaby bitch that has had his level of success. But to pretend like Bird can't be in discussions with him is ridiculous.

Yes. If he drew more attention to himself instead of being so humble he would be in the top 5.

Yes, but he wasn't flashy, just so solidly technical, that a lot of people will not put him there. But, he's every bit deserving IMO...

Not that ESPN is the end all, but they did a really nice job compiling a list recently. This is what they had.

1. Jordan
2. Kareem
3. LeBron
4. Magic
5. Wilt
6. Bird
7. Russell
8. Duncan
9. Shaq
10. Hakeem
11. Oscar
12. Kobe
13. Logo
14. Dr. J
15. Moses
16. Malone
17. Dirk
18. Barkley
19. Stockton
20. Robinson

Not a bad list as a whole.

ML one in their right mind would choose Stockton over David Robinson though.

Uh, is this a real comment? Please place garnett on the spurs and they are nowhere even the same team

GTFO here. All of the advanced statistics favor Garnett. KG's +/- dwarves Duncan's. Garnett had a better RAPM in 10/15 years from 1998-2012. Garnett was probably the slightly better player. At best, the two are a push. The only reason KG didn't have the team success of Duncan is that he never had a coach and organization as good as what Duncan had with Popovich and the Spurs. He never had a supporting cast that came close to rivaling Duncan's until he went to the Celtics when he was in the back end of his prime and we all saw how much team success he had there.

That stat is from Kurt Schillings Twitter feed. I'm sure you can trust that....

Here's the true breakdown of the Larry/LeBron stats

LINK

BTW. Anytime you see a meme with stats on it take it with a grain of salt and not face value. They are usually full of misinformation. Although everyone believes everything posted on FB. Which is why the world is where it is these days...

I honestly believe Bill Russell is the greatest NBA player of all-time. His defensive impact was off the charts. Think about how good Barry Bonds was at the plate in the 2000s and that's basically what Bill Russell was like on defense. The Celtics finished #1 in defensive rating in 12 of the 13 years he was in the league. The Celtics were usually very mediocre offensively usually ranking near the bottom half of the league but it didn't matter at all because they were so good at locking down opposing teams defensively in the playoffs and that was almost entirely due to Russell.
