As probably the most overrated baseball player in my lifetime, I will say that seeing a single digit number retired as a Yankee might be an event that we never see again.

No his number isn't retired his jersey is.
But doubt they let anyone wear 2 again

He was not the best ever or anything like that but I would take him on my team if I knew he would show up for work everyday and put up he numbers he did....

A better question is "Why do the Yankees retire so many numbers?" I know the Orioles and a number of other teams have a policy where only HOFers who go into the HOF under the team's cap get their number retired. The Yankees have retired the jerseys of Billy Martin, Roger Maris, Jorge Posada, Elston Howard, Ron Guidry and Bernie Williams. If it was a lesser franchise, I can understand retiring the jerseys of those guys but for a franchise like the Yankees, it's perplexing.

They are the most stories franchise in baseball history.... Let them do what they want....
All I know is that Numbers 3,4,8 and 7 are LEGIT without question......

He did it in NY. If it was Kansas City, I doubt he even makes the Hall.

Jeter is going to be a first ballot HOF and will probably get the highest vote total ever. That is hilarious

Naw, he has a lot of hits so he makes the Hall, but he would get the publicity that George Brett does.
or Robin Yount in Milwaukee or Gwynn on SD
You'd have heard of him but the national media wouldn't be nearly as breathless about it.
I do give him credit for not doing knucklehead obnoxious things, seems to have a handle on being famous.

Say what you will but all his numbers/stats as comparison to others are borderline hall worthy by every measure.

He will get in based on longevity. His career WAR is over the threshold and gets his JAWS over the threshold, but his peak WAR seasons fall short

His black ink measure is 10, average HOF is 27
His Grey ink measure is 145, average HOF is 144
Doing it in NYC just made him ten times the legend he actually is. If I remember correctly he was a pretty shitty defensive SS.

But would he have had as many hits in KC... Jeter was usually surrounded by a lot better players than there were in KC....

Let me know the next time 3,400 hits gets left out of the Hall sans Pete Rose. TIA

You think he's overrated? That's pretty asinine.

Find me a .310 hitter with 3,465 hits who struggled to make the hall
