Gray before last season was a no-doubt ace. Injuries were clearly the issue, and it's a total unknown if they were a one-year aberration. If the A's are really selling at this point, that's not really a good sign.

I'm skeptical Gray is the answer

he'd be the best pitcher on the staff. Maybe not an ace, but certainly the Astros ace.

If they're going to deal from the top of their system they should be aiming for a significant upgrade. Gray would not have been the best pitcher on their staff any of the last three years.

Not by enough to justify a deal and what the asking price likely is

Sounds like Gray IMO

Come on LE -- you can't have it both ways. Every season you say that Keuchel is not an Ace, despite winning the Cy Young. Ok, I agree with you.

But then you say Sonny Gray should be treated like an Ace... even though his seasons/career really isn't as good of a trajectory as Keuchel's? So, now you think the Astros should trade him, simply because he would be the Astros Ace? Yet -- Keuchel was the Astro's Ace in 2015 and you said over and over that it was wrong to call him an Ace, because he is not. (And yes, I've come around to the dark side and agree with you on this point).

Regardless, it sounds a bit flippy-floppy on your part. You're usually pretty even-keel on your critique of players.

I think that's what the other guy was trying to say -- he isn't an Ace... don't get desperate and trade for him like he is an Ace.

Yeah, his numbers were ace-level. His skill set was ace-level as a starter. Saying he was performing to that standard is not saying he was a Top 10 MLB starter overall. But he was a TOR starter for sure.

Not big on gray. Very slight build and he won't hold up long term.

and i guess thats where the semantics comes in. i wouldnt call him an ace but thats because i think we only have like 7 or 8 actual "aces" in baseball

I first read that as "AJ Reed looking frat AF"... My reaction was confusion because he just looks fat to me.

Then I read again and thought, "oh. yeah."

That's a shame -- was hoping he'd really get into shape and work hard this off-season. I got to see him play a couple of games in CC. Then again in 3 games in Houston. Dude has a beautiful swing. Maybe he needs some of Big-Jon's weed? Wait, on second thought, AJ is the last guy on the team that needs to have the munchies.

Sure, I get that. There's "best in baseball" and "ace of the staff" concepts to me. Some staffs lack an ace (bat signal to LE), but Gray was an ace the previous two seasons for Oakland and not just a guy filling the No. 1 starter role.

He's at over 88% right now. Only needs to pull 60% of the remaining votes.

Looks like He makes it Easily

He's gotten 88% of the ballots made public so far. Those ballots make of 51% of the total votes. The presumption is this is the year he makes it in.
