I would be fine with trading Phillips for someone with control, just don't want to do it for someone who is leaving after the year. I don't think there's anyone in the system now is Correa level talented and untouchable, there's just a bunch of solid players like Phillips, Reed, Bregman etc

Linhow is not going to trade Phillips or reed for rentals. Believe that. He will try to move kemp...santana...singleton..hoes...maybe Devinski or gregor.

So Luhnow was on 610 this morning.

Some quotes:

quote:

“If we were going to trade for a player whose contract expired at the end of this year we would all have to assume that that player is not going to return,” Luhnow said. “I think that is the wise thing to do. It’s a bonus if the player enjoys being in Houston and wants to stay here but some of the names that are being discussed and some of the guys we are talking about are going to command hundred plus million dollar contracts next year. And we might not be the best team for those players, but we might be the best team for those players in the playoff run this year. We’re going to have to evaluate it player by player and really see what we have to give up and see what we are getting in return. Everything is a gamble if you go for one of these short term guys, you are going to have to give up some future potential to do it.”

I don't like the sound of that... I really hope Crane isn't going to be a cheapass.

quote:

“My approach is that no one is untouchable,” Luhnow said of any player in the Astros Minor League system. “I’ve got to listen. We have a robust minor league system. We’ve got a lot of prospects. Different teams like different guys so I’ve got to listen to who they like and what their proposals are and see if they make sense for us.”

That's not what Luhnow is saying at all. He is saying that you have to assume a rental is nothing more than that. A rental is a free agent who can do anything he wants in the offseason so you cannot assume acquiring him will give any benefit in attempts to sign him long-term.

Example: We could match whatever anyone offers for David Price, but he may have his heart set on playing again for Maddon with the Cubs.

It was really just the comment about the 100+ million dollar contracts that makes me leery.

I'd just hate for us to get a rental, and have a chance to match an offer and didn't because they don't want to spend the money.

Probably just flashbacks to the last ownership.

This org won't be doling out any 100 mil contracts until Correa is due his second one.

I was half way listening to that interview as well. He also said something along the lines of the only "untouchables" on the big club are Correa, Keuchel, Springer, and Altuve. Everyone else seems to be fair game for the right deal.

I hear ya. But I think that means more along the lines of them wanting to rent a Cueto or Price and then sign a more fiscally reasonable starter like Kazmir in the offseason. If they think LMJ is going to be an ace type and already have Keuchel, it makes sense.

I can agree with that. I'm not really concerned with the pitching, (Although I'd like to add Kazmir) outside of another Lefty in the Bullpen, Thatcher needs to GTFO. We are currently 10th in Starter ERA, and 4th in BP ERA.

I think if they can get more consistency out of the offense, the team will be fine (for this year).

We have all of these guys like Feldman, Obie, Peacock, Fausto, etc. that you have no idea what to expect when they take the hill and are likely always going to be 4.50+ ERA guys. That has to change, whether it's before the deadline or in free agency.

He is a pipe dream. He ain't signing with Houston in the off-season given what he will.command. even if he wanted to be here we aren't going to pay him his market value.
