May looks like it could be a telling month for the future of this season. Have series against some presumed AL playoff teams outside of the normal AL west teams.

4 against the Jays at home, 4 on the road with the Tigers, and 3 on the road with the O's

You aren't getting a proven rotation arm for Villar unless he's thrown in with a major prospect. If they want a proven top 3 rotation guy who has time left on his deal then Appel or McCullers is probably gone. I would rather they hold on to those guys and try to sign Zimmermann or Price this offseason. Promote Appel if the time is right and treat that as a midseason trade or trade some other not as valuable prospect(s) for a short rental on an older guy who you won't be resigning

I'm mostly glad that we can discuss deals that contenders make

I.agree. get a Feldman type guy at the break and buy a legit 1 or 2 type in free agency next winter..I mean they did promise to start spending once they got back close to contention

Sorry i didn't mean it to sound like I was proposing Villar straight up for a #3 starter.

I just meant he could be a key piece in a trade.

He won't be a key piece to anyone...he would be a throw in.

Yeah this is what I was getting at, and I think you could get a Feldman type who's deal is up at the end of the year for not much. Pelfrey is a pretty good example of this, Minnesota is building for the future and he's 32 and a free agent next year. He was hurt and bad the last couple years but is pitching well so far. Trade a couple spare parts for him and throw money at Zimmermann, Price, Greinke or Cueto this offseason.

I'm not an optimist about keeping it going tonight. Our streak has been rooted in good pitching and Deduno hasn't been particularly good as a starter. 4.43 career ERA as a starter (over 5 last year). I don't feel good about him starting but we have overcome Wojo twice so maybe we keep it going..

Folty has been killing it in the minors. 30 strikeouts in 21.2 innings.

We need to leave him in there and let him take his lumps...no need to blow up our bullpen this early in the series.

Astros don't have a day off for like the next 10 days, so you're right about preserving the pen. I also wouldn't be surprised if he is kept in to eat a few innings even if he gets hit hard early. And as much as I like Jabroni, it isn't like he has made a habit of going late in games even when he is preventing runs. So we may need the BP for a few innings tomorrow night in a more winnable game on paper.

All signs kinda point to us sticking with Deduna tonight for a long haul, for better or worse.

I want to see Tommy Shirley get a shot first, if he keeps pitching well in AAA.

I agree. I would rather see Shirley. I think they would have to make a 40 man roster move to bring him up though so I dunno if they would do that. Maybe if they DFA Thatcher- seems weird to have Sipp, Chapman and Thatcher on the roster so I would think Thatcher's days are numbered

Maybe Chapman is just here for today for long relief if Deduno gets roughed up

ETA: long relief for the next couple days I mean

4 baby Stros on the Baseball America "Prospect Hot Sheet"
quote:

1. Carlos Correa, ss, Astros

Team: Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas)
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .429/.500/.893 (9-for-21), 6 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 8 RBIs, 4 BB, 3 SO, 4-for-4 SB

The Scoop: After a week away from the Hot Sheet, Correa is back, and deservedly so. The No. 1 overall pick in 2012 hit three of his five homers this week, and he leads the Texas League in both batting (.385) and slugging (.744), while trailing Midland’s Matt Olson and Frisco’s Drew Robinson by only one home run. With Astros regular shortstop Jed Lowrie on the shelf until after the all-star break, the calls for Correa in Houston (instead of Jonathan Villar) are going to intensify in the next few weeks.

quote:

11. Preston Tucker, lf, Astros

Team: Triple-A Fresno (Pacific Coast)
Age: 24
Why He’s Here: .375/.385/.875 (9-for-24), 6 R, 4 HR, 11 RBIs, 1 BB, 5 SO

The Scoop: Tucker is part of the same 2012 Astros draft class that also included Carlos Correa and Lance McCullers Jr.—both of whom also appear on Hot Sheet this week—but what makes Tucker’s case different is that he’s a seventh-rounder who signed for $100,000 as a Florida senior. His eight home runs lead the minors, but it’s hard to see exactly where he fits in Houston’s short-term plans because while his bat has produced loud results (66 homers, .507 slugging as a pro), he offers little value outside the batters’s box.

quote:

16. Lance McCullers Jr., rhp, Astros

Team: Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 SO

The Scoop: Mark Appel isn’t the only Astros pitcher thrilled to put high Class A Lancaster in his rear-view. A back injury may have worsened McCullers’ below-average control in 2014, but his four-inning, no-walk outing this week is the first time he’s worked that long without issuing a free pass since a June 2013 start at low Class A Quad Cities. His 94-96 mph fastball and power breaking ball give him one of the best one-two punches in the minors, and he’s put his weaponry to good use in 2015 in now allowing an earned run through 14 innings.
quote:

18. Bret Phillips, cf, Astros

Team: high Class A Lancaster (California)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .286/.375/.762 (6-for-21), 4 R, 1 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBIs, 1 BB, 3 SO

The Scoop: Phillips has soared up the ranks of Astros prospects and is not slowing down. Power seemed to be the only question mark—even after he blasted 17 home runs last year—but he’s easing that concern with three bombs this week. Phillips projects to be at least a solid-average hitter and his early showing indicates why the Astros believe he can be an everyday player in center.

So he looks like a .300/20/100 guy who hits both handed pitchers well. So what if he is just an adequate LF?

They didn't sign Jed to be a trade asset this year. They signed Thatcher, Roberto & Rasmus as trade assets. They signed Jed to be a placeholder for Correa for a year - year and a half.
