Kind of a bitch move to resign him then trade him too given the reason we got him is because he wanted to be in Houston

Not that this is any ground-breaking news... but I missed this article the other day .
with Lowrie gone, does that open the door for Valbuena staying at 3rd, Carter at 1st (until Reed shows up?)? Or do we still think Carter is gone?
quote:
Brian McTaggart of MLB.com spoke to Astros GM Jeff Luhnow about his team’s upcoming arbitration decisions and was told that there are no budgetary constraints dictating whether or not the team will tender or non-tender any of its eight arb-eligible players. Nonetheless, McTaggart writes that one of Chris Carter, Luis Valbuena, Evan Gattis or Jason Castro is likely to be non-tendered, with Carter representing the likeliest option. With prospect A.J. Reed representing an affordable alternative, the team can probably afford to cut bait with Carter. Valbuena and Jed Lowrie are capable of handling first base in his stead if needed, McTaggart adds.

The Orioles have re-acquired outfielderL.J. Hoes in a trade with the Astros, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (Twitter link). Hoes had been designated for assignment last week. Roch Kubtako of MASNsports.com tweets that the Astros will receive cash considerations.

From MLB.com:
, McCurry adds to his deception by varying his arm slot, and thus far he has confounded left-handed and right-handed hitters alike.
And from Stockton pitching coach Rick Rodriguez, via A’s Farm:
He’s got a very good fastball, but I think he was trying to trick too many guys. Now it’s like, "Hey Brendan, throw your fastball, use your fastball. You’ve got a really good fastball." He’s got a good moving fastball. He drops down and throws that little sidearm curve or slider or whatever you want to call it. And he’s gotten it down now to where, instead of it being flat across the zone, it’s got a little bit of tilt. … And he’s got a plus changeup.

This and the hoes trade were set ups for something big. We dumped salary and added money basically. Really thought we would have gotten more than their #30 prospect even tho the stats are good.

I think carter is still gone. 3b will rotate Duffy, Val, MGon with Duffy given every chance to win it outright by opening day. 1b will rotate Reed, Val, MGon & possibly Singleton with Reed taking over almost full time whenever he is called up (they wont call him up to be a part time player, imo. When he is up, its as a full time hitter between 1b and DH).
I really think Singleton either starts back off in AAA or is included in a trade though. Because of that, I think Reed is given the chance in spring to win it outright and be on the roster opening day regardless of super 2 dates and all of that stuff. Again, imo
Edit: obviously any possible trades for 3b or 1B changes everything

I'm underwhelmed. Kind of a bitch move to sign Lowrie to a 3 year deal and then trade him after 1 year.
Beyond that, when healthy Lowrie has one of the better offensive skill sets on the team. So our offense takes a hit. For what? The A's 30th ranked prospect who isn't major league ready. Yo Jeff, we're competing for playoffs now. It's time to stop dumping salaries for minor leaguers.

All arms on deck, I like it.
Lowrie did nothing when we needed him to. We've got players ready to take 3B full time (Duffy)
Chill, trust the plan

I feel something big coming. Actually two big things.
A big trade and a big signing. That's what we are gearing up for.

I really thought that if we traded lowrie for a minor league player it would be for something better. Lowrie was MLB average across the board and we got a 5'10 minor league reliever for him. This is why there is no way we don't make some kind of big move. A good FA or trade

here are a couple of quotes summed up
quote:
"We have a lot of choices at 3rd & 1st and we weren't going to have spots for everybody & there was definitely a market for Jed. We had an excess of corner players & figured moving Jed (lowrie) would ease that logjam a little bit if we got something back that we liked & also allow us to deploy those resources into an area of greater need. Brendan McCurry:"He's had a good track record yet. He's got a chance to contribute to our bullpen as early as this upcoming year"
quote:
We've still got some spots open in the bullpen..we're considering whether or not it makes sense to add another starter to our rotation" Lowrie talks began in GM meetings

Word. I felt that a Valubuena/Duffy platoon at 3B while both can also play 1B was the way to go. Jed gets hurt too much.
Use the farm! I think Reed will have to lose his spot on the opening day roster at this point.
Meanwhile, the trade for one or more bullpen guys is coming.

Good move for Stros... A's take on the salary for a pkayer destined to ride the bench and can't stay healthy.

I disagree. I think we had every intention of keeping him if he didn't get injured. His injury brought correa up early and we have cheaper options for third. This way he gets a better chance to play everyday...if he can handle it.

I think the Astros make a move for a 3B this offseason. Go with a 1 year cheap stop gap. Beckham or Frees fit that bill and offer a veteran influence as well. Plus neither minds platoon in if needs be.
