Dabo: Wide Receiver is the worst-coached position in the NFL

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney knows the wide receiver position as well as anyone in college football, having been a receiver himself at Alabama, then coaching the position before ascending to the head-coaching ranks at CU. And while he's never been on an NFL staff, he's seen enough pro football to believe the position isn't coached particularly well at the game's highest level.
"I think it's the worst-coached position in the NFL. I think sometimes people just throw a guy out there and say 'Go coach these guys,' and it's a very detailed, technical position," Swinney told The Rich Eisen Show on Thursday.

Curtis Johnson should be looking for a gig soon...

I do think there's a laziness these teams have whenever they have uber elite WRs.
"Hey we've got this kid that runs a 4.3 at 6'5 220.....lets just let him run posts and fade routes all game and 70 percent of the time they are just decoys"
and that's how you end up with Marvin Jones and Cole Beasly ending up with 14 targets in one game while Dez and AJ get 5.

Run route and catch ball
Run route and draw flag
There I can coach wide outs in the NFL

Guys like Hopkins and Bryant are better players in the NFL than they were in college maybe Dabo can't coach WRs.

I can't stand Dabo but Hopkins was dominant at Clemson.

to that, I'd say it has a lot to do with the work ethic of the player.
either they want to put in the work or they don't.

they could just leave that part out. He was a bench warmer.

Yeah, Hopkins red-shirted his frosh year, and then was a freshman all american his first year playing. He was productive all three years at Clemson.
Bryant had all the physical attributes than anyone would want in a WR with his height and speed, but he was extremely raw when he got to Clemson. Bryant went from having little production his first 2 years (except for leading NCAA in yards/catch as a soph) to blowing up his junior year and then deciding to go pro.
At the end of the day, all of the Clemson WR's were pretty productive in college. Not saying it had anything to do with Dabo, but they were all, for the most part, highly recruited, and had a good passing system with Morris calling the plays where they did a good job of throwing the ball down the field and spreading it around.

quote:Hopkins had better numbers than Sammy Watkins one year. Bryant's problem was he was on a team with Hopkins and Watkins. Tajh Boyd looked for those two first. Bryant dropped a ton of balls at Clemson.

If Dabo is so good and the NFL is that bad, then surely Clemson should have about 30 starting WRs in the NFL by now.

For as shitty as he was an HC, Joker Phillips is a solid WR coach.

We rag on Dabo a lot but the dude knows his shite. He is probably right to a good degree.

Dabo goes a little overboard after wins, but if he is our coach I probably wouldn't have a problem with it. I'd take him at LSU
