Cause of death is unknown at this time, but was stated by the Orlando Police Department that he died alone.

Also stated "that there is nothing suspicious to report"

NFLers die earlier. The beating they take from being kids on up takes it tool.

Don't be surprised if fewer and fewer kids are encouraged to play football.

Bummer. He looked in good shape when he got inducted into the HOF.

Never really had the opportunity to truly appreciate how dominant a player Cortez was for both Miami and Seattle. The dude won NFL Defensive Player of the Year on a 2-14 team after acquiring 14 sacks, which doesn't make any sense but rewarded his persistence and diligence on the defensive line. He was so consistent for some very putrid Seattle teams but could arguably be cited as one of the few players who rejuvenated that franchise for the new millennium. Next to Warren Sapp, the epitome of the great modern defensive tackle.

Retired football players are starting to have the mortality rate of professional wrestlers.

He was one of the great defensive players of the 90's. He played on some bad teams on the West coast when the only national broadcast was MNF, and Seattle games were rarely seen outside of local markets. Still every NFL fan knew Cortez was a badass.

I know he credited Coach O with developing him. In fact, he might have been the guy that began Orgeron's climb from an unknown assistant, to Dline guru, and all the way to LSU head coach.
