Just because it isn't an even playing field doesn't make a championship 'mythical' or legit.
How many sports out there have a completely level playing field?
MLB doesn't.
NFL doesn't.
No college sports do.

The divisional format can benefit one team and penalize another. If an SEC West team plays Georgia and Tennessee while another gets to play Vandy & Kentucky the second team has a big advantage. As long as conference keep expanding and getting bigger that will keep being an issue. The Big 12 teams all play each other so you really have a true champion.....or should if your league has normal tie-break rules in place.

It's mythical until every conference champion is in the playoffs

If you can win every game and not be champion it's mythical end of story.

6 team playoff:
ACC champ
BIG Champ
PAC Champ
Big 12 Champ (need to add a championship game)
SEC Champ
At Large
Would put a premium on winning the conference championship games so as to not be fighting for the one at large spot.
I would also stipulate that the at large team doesn't necessarily have to be the 6 seed but can't be top 2 and get a bye.

regular season is when the bye weeks must be equal because regular season bye weeks are not earned. playoff bye weeks have been earned
No they havent
The schedules are not equal.
If you are in a weak division you are far more likely to get that bye than if you are in one with several good teams.
Also, the fact that a completely undeserving 8-8 team can get in the playoffs and reach the Super Bowl by winning a weak division is completely unfair to teams that have better records yet get left out.

Big 12 teams have 2 byes as opposed to other power 5 teams having 1 bye. The college football committee will be comparing apples and oranges when ranking these teams.
The entire season is apples and oranges.

So why should the Independents not get an auto bid, why must you be in a conference to earn an auto bid?
Also what if Notre Dame sweeps all the ACC teams on it's schedule does it go in as the ACC Champ or At large? Then the ACC has 2 teams it can call champion.
Who determines who is the champion of the league? The winner of CG or the winner in regular season?
Ex: Alabama wins the SEC with best record but loses in the SECCG to say Florida who has 4 losses. Does the SEC get to say Alabama is their entrant or does the committee get to say Florida due to winning the CG (Argument used for basketball mostly when you got only 1 team in the NCAAT)
What if there is a year when multiple teams are upset in the CCG and the teams with best records and "best" schedules are left out? Strength of Schedule is a flawed metric anyway.

Should have added that. ND should have to join a conference to be eligible in my opinion.

CG winner. If there are upsets than it is what it is. Same as any other sport. Like i said it would add importance to those games. IMO if you don't win your conference then you don't really have a foot to stand on as far as complaining about being left out.

So does BYU and Army have to join a conference also?
But what if the conference wants to send regular season winner over CG winner or not have a CG?

Meh, i think another layer of this argument is that the P5 will eventually break off. The other 5 conferences kind of get shite on with the current set up and eventually it seems like they'll want a chance to play for something more than just one little bid to a major bowl.

I would think if there were ever a format change like the one I mentioned then the conferences would have to agree on it one way or the other beforehand.
My main point was that I agree that conference champions should have a seat at the table.
