Okay, we’ve moved beyond the New Year’s Eve letdown that was the College Football Playoff semifinals. Alabama and Clemson played Monday night for the championship. Two big-boy teams with big-boy followings. Time for some hardcore TV-rating magic. No more 40 percent drops from 2015. No more ESPN ponying up $20 million in ad buybacks to disgruntled advertisers.

1) Not as attractive a matchup; 2) not as much excitement around CFP as last year; 3) semis TV drop is contagious.
I kind of disagree with No. 1. Just like last year’s game between Ohio State and Oregon, Monday’s contest featured one of college football’s blue bloods against a perennial contender. Last year, Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota was playing. This year, Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry was playing. Oregon plays at a fast pace that’s fun to watch. Clemson plays at a fast pace that’s fun to watch.
But Nos. 2 and 3 are more or less undeniable. The inaugural playoff was a novelty last year, with the two semifinals on New Year’s Day drawing boffo numbers. This year’s semifinals, on New Year’s Eve, were an afterthought to many. It obviously spread to the title game.
But hey, look at all these people who watched the game online!

I don't think anyone expected this game to out rate last year's.

Ohio State has a huge fan base, that's the main reason.

Maybe the New York TV executives will see this and start rigging games for other teams.

I don't think blowouts in the semi's helped generate as much interest.
OSU v Oregon is a sexier match-up than Bama v Clemson for sure .

I don't know how much, if any, this has to do with it, but living on the east coast, 830 is just too late for games to be starting.
Like 80% of the US population is in the Eastern and Central time zones. They should be catering to them

I think they need to do something to tweak the timing of both the semis and the championship game.
ETA, I mean both the dates/days (too far removed from the bowls, and I don't buy the notion that Monday is the best possible day to play the final) and time (as someone above said, it's too late for the East Coast.

Maybe people stop giving a shite as much since it's just another game. Maybe they decided to keep their money instead of paying for the greedy channels and cable companies.

Do those TV ratings include the WatchESPN viewers?

That's a bit surprising, because it was a good game.
But that shite was late

Do they factor in the WatchESPN numbers into the overall ratings?
I'm a cord cutter (like a quickly growing number of people). I used WatchESPN to watch the game.

Clemson's not gonna draw a lot of viewers nationwide

Definitely started too late
