What is the plan? They did nothing at the winter meetings, signed Ian Stewart who is terrible. I figured they would have been in a lot of moves and they have money to spend, what gives?

I agree, don't understand why you make no moves. Your team is fricked and the farm system sucks. The royals would have gave up anything for a good pitcher, should have tried Garza with them. Also no speed at all so if the twins where giving up Revers why not in those talks as well.

We're gonna suck forever. Cubbies have been hard to watch of late.

From what I hear, they aren't going to be big movers in free agency until they think their younger guys are ready to be more everyday players. There are several younger guys in the system who are still a couple of years away.

As for Garza, I think they know they would only be getting pennies on the dollar for him right now with him coming off the injury. Once he can show he's healthy again, I can easily see them shipping him out for better prospects than they could get right now.

It's just a shame he got hurt. Had he been healthy to close out the year, he probably would have fetched a nice get for the Cubs at the Winter Meetings. We'll just have to wait out the first half of the season for that.

The Cubs did resign Ian Stewart and also signed OF Nate Schierholtz, both to one year deals. I was pulling for them to sign Eric Chavez to play 3B...at least he is better than Stewart and would be a trade chip at the deadline.

Yea I'm thinking if he can have a good first have they can trade him to a contender and get a solid return. Possibly Soriano too

Looks like the are trying to get a bunch of veteran players to short term deals, so that they aren't locked into anyone for the long term right now. This team is not ready to win this year and probably won't be ready to win until 2015 or so with Rizzo, Jackson, Castro, Barney and this young talent. There is no point in locking in long term deals with high priced free agents until the team is ready to win.

You sure about that??

Epstein & Hoyer have made several moves, while not making a big splash with current MLB players, beefing up our farm system...The future looks pretty bright IMO

You throw in a Garza move that would net us at least 2 B level prospects

I like the direction they are taking this team, you just have to have patience

Agreed, but the Ricketts Family will get antsy as hell with all those empty seats... my prediction is it will look like last August in Wrigley by June this year. I hate it, but the reset button had to be pushed.

And don't forget Jorge Soler...that guy could be ready to join the club in a year or so. What worries me, however, is pitching in the minors.

Right it totally sucks. I probably watch about 110 games a year or so TV and last year got painful by mid June.

The center pieces of this franschise are clearly going to be Rizzo, Castro, Barney and maybe Jackson. They need to build this team up based on when these guys are really ready to win. I think the focus needs to be on keeping Garza, as he is still young and could still produce when this young crop is ready.

If Matt Garza comes out red hot to start the season, they better sell...

Junior Lake is a big time IF prospect. I don't think the Cubs 100% know what they are going to do with the kid. He is a SS right now, but with Castro, they aren't sure if they are going to try and maybe slide him over to 3B. That would be a hell of a left side of the IF when that kid is ready to come up.

Jorge Soler is another one. He is an OF. Cuban kid they signed last season that is a projected 2014 MLB ready player. We shall see, hopefully his development moves in the right direction this season.

Ian Stewart...ugh.

Last season was actually fun to watch early outside of the bullpen blowing games. but by mid year they were counting down games. Castro routinely pulls up on base baths now and losing so much may have soured him

If they do, they need to get at least one MLB ready minor leaguer (or one that is real close, AAA guy). They don't need to keep stocking up the bottom of the farm system and need to get guys who can produce at the MLB level when Castro, Rizzo and co are ready to win.

Both those guys look solid. Dont know how i didnt hear about them. I think the only thing that the Cubs will lack is a big time power hitter and some pitching but im sure they will be free agent players before then. I think it could work out good for the 2015 season.

This isn't really true at all.

Castro's problem right now is focusing on the game. He loses sight of the situation far too often and doesn't remember how many outs there are (in the field or on the bases) and doesn't throw to the right base at times. Dale Sveum is a real good coach and those mental lapses will start to happen less and less.
