Cubs signed President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein to a five-year contract extension.

Further details for the contract will be announced later on Wednesday. USA Today's Bob Nightengale is reporting that the extension will be in excess of $50 million. Since joining the Cubs in 2011, Epstein has steadily built the club into a World Series favorite. This season, the Cubbies have run away with the NL Central. Their record currently sits at 101-56. In addition to Epstein, GM Jed Hoyer and vice president Jason McLeod are also being awarded extensions.

Howard Bryant wrote in ESPN magazine that the only reason Theo got a job in the first place was institutional racism.

I never understood why baseball executives have been so undervalued through the years. I consider a GM/President of Baseball Operations to be as important as a NFL head coach or CFB head coach. Theo Epstein means just as much to the Chicago Cubs as Urban Meyer has meant to Ohio State or Pete Carroll has meant to the Seattle Seahawks.

Very glad that Jed and Jason also are locked up. They work as a great triumvirate.

If he wins a title with the Cubs after having won with the Sox, he will go down as the greatest baseball exec of all time, IMO.

Theo Epstein is massively overrated

This is the strategy of his genius:

1. Be GM of team with big market and deep pockets

2. Buy free agents

That's it. All he does is buy buy buy. Those Red Sox teams had payrolls as high as the Yankees and this Cubs team is just a bunch of bought players too.

Good point. They definitely bought high-priced free agents like Kris Bryant, Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks, Anthony Rizzo, etc.

So true. And I love that Cubs fans understood the vision and were willing to be realistic about the timeline and what needed to happen.

What? He bought Lester, Lackey, Heyward, and Chapman. Zobrist was a solid pick up. Tons of drafted talent. He bought minimal.

He's the Clayton Kershaw/Mark Prior of GMs.

Cubs opening day payroll was 14th in MLB. A testament to his ability to identify talent and make the right trades to bring them in.

Exactly. People just spit out nonsense without even looking into it.
