The Cubs are 6-5 after their first 11 games after losing 2 of 3 to a good San Diego team. That series was a rollercoaster in that it had Krismas Day 2015, Bryant's first hit, first double, 4 BB, a HBP, some terrible umpiring at home plate and Maddon's first ejection. It also started off with Neil Ramirez and Mike Olt being sent to the disabled list and Arismendy Alcantara's continued struggles at the plate.

Addison Russell has been playing 2B for Iowa since the series in New Orleans. Iowa manager Marty Pevey is on record saying that Russell will be his starting secondbaseman "until I'm told for him not to play second". Addison Russell may be on the fast track to Wrigley.

Add to that, Javier Baez has yet to return from the bereavement list. Baez had a lot to work on with his approach at the plate and the death of his sister has further delayed his eventual return. Baez wasn't likely to drastically overcome his approach problems in a few weeks, so the odds of him returning to Chicago soon are very slim I'd imagine.

The dots are starting to connect.

Game time tonight is 6:05 PM in Pittsburgh.

I like what I have seen thus far, albeit a little inconsistent. If Lester can get on track, and the young guys get the bats rolling it could be a good summer.

Alcantara, get with the program

This team is playing really well right now. The only thing I'm worried about is how long will Neil Ramirez be out and when will Justin Grimm be back. Those are two very important pieces for one of the best young bullpens in baseball.

Nothing else about this team concerns me.

I share that concern. But Wada should be back soon to provide another arm.

I'm okay with Castro just fine...and this thing with Baez is making him even more valuable IMO.

I'm telling you...he's definitely the new Soriano. Significantly more uncalled for with Castro than Soriano, but both really dumb hate.

Castro is on such a great contract that it is impossible to be mad at his value. I like him and the contract. Cubtards are not realizing that Castro only has to be the fourth or best fifth best hitter on this team (or worse once Russell and Schwarber are up). He is no longer carrying the brunt of the load with this team sucked. They have Soler, Rizzo, and Bryant for the heavy lifting.

By the way, I have a strong feeling tonight will be a 2-1 type pitcher's duel with each team fanning like 10+ times.

Just thinking about this future lineup is awesome:

CF Fowler (I seriously want to lock him up)
RF Soler
1B Rizzo
3B Bryant
LF Schwarber
2B Russell
SS Castro
C Montero
SP I guess he would hit eighth with Maddon

Lester
Arrieta
FA???
Hendricks
Jason Hammel

Trade Baez to the Mets for someone like Wheeler
Still have AA as a Swiss army knife off the bench
Coghlan as a fourth outfielder
That still leaves a plus, plus defender in Almora to play CF in the future if he learn to walk a little
???
Profit and win WS

God, I hope not. I'm waiting for this offense to put together a gigantic showing now that Bryant is in it. Castro kills Burnett and Rizzo has a couple bombs off of him in his career and now add in Soler, Bryant and Fowler. Should be good hitter's weather in Pitt. I hope we put together a good performance tonight (6-8 runs).

I have no issue with Herrera. I would much rather be playing somewhat struggling AA, but not a big deal. I do wish LaStella was healthy though.

I forgot the most important part of the master plan above. Sign Tony Campana as the 25th man, have him pinch run and steal second a la 2004 Dave Roberts with the Cubs down to their last out in the NLCS Game 4 that sparks eight straight wins in a wild run that mirrors the 2004 Sox.

Based on what we're seeing in Iowa, methinks you won't have to curse Herrera much longer.

Some noticeable names have been recently DFA'd...Grant Balfour (whom Joe Maddon has experience) and Kyle Drabek (former first round draft pick of Toronto's).

I wonder with the the injury to Ramirez and Grimm still being out and Schlitter being awful if the Cubs don't at least inquire on one of them...I would not hate it if Chris Bosio got his hands on Drabek, honestly. Something like the chance Jacob Turner is getting (recently transferred to the 60-day DL).

ETA: I take it back, he was a draft pick of the Phillies.

Yeah, I would take a chance on Drabek. Balfour is a hot head. I am not sure how bad I want him even with a solid track record.

He's 27 now, but taking a chance on him and stashing him away at AAA is something that screams total Cub move.
