Conference USA members Rice and Texas-El Paso are being mentioned as possible Mountain West Conference expansion candidates as the MWC begins regularly scheduled meetings this weekend, multiple sources told CBS Sports.

There is a faction of league presidents that favor Rice because of its overall academic reputation, sources said. In 2014, the football program finished 26th nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, which measures academic achievement of sports programs. The nationally-ranked baseball program finished 17th last season.

UTEP's communication with the Mountain West goes back at least three years. A possible membership change has more to do with geography. The school's nearest CUSA opponent is Texas-San Antonio, 534 miles away.

The MWC wants badly to get back into Texas after the loss of TCU.

Nobody wants to absorb Rice. Too many carbs.

Not sure how thrilled UNM would be in allowing UTEP in either.

CUSA would probably backfill with Georgia State and South Alabama

why would Rice leave for MWC when the closest school would be UTEP?

That would crush ULL...they already have an inferiority complex. By the way, when is the NCAA going to hand down it's decision on the buying of players and ACT score fixing?

More money. Plus Rice was in the WAC for years. They're used to it.

Would be a solid move for all parties involved. MWC adds Texas and UTEP and Rice upgrade conferences.

UTEP has a decent football history and support, while Rice obviously is an elite academic institution with a top notch baseball program.

Could somewhat close the gap between MWC and AAC.

I'd think travel is easier when you have a major airport in town like Houston...

Big XII would be better suited for Rice.

When the SWC died, why didn't the Big XII add Rice?

Wasn't it political (Ann Richards)?

I saw this on King of the Hill.

Had something to do with Baylor not wanting Rice in the conference. I forget the story

Yep. The SWC preferred a full merger with the Big Eight, but the Big Eight only wanted to take four schools. Ann Richards was governor of Texas at the time and used her influence to make sure Baylor was the fourth school. I'm not sure whether that was at the expense of Rice or someone else.

It had to do with Baylor wanting in the conference period. It resulted in the exclusion of Rice, UH and SMU. Richards was a Baylor alumna.

ETA -- UH was the most notable exclusion at the time.
