I'm agreeing with everything you've said, but melo, or any player for that matter, shouldn't comment on it.

And this one particular pp shite contract, in a league chocked full of them, has teammates responding. Why?

I can't follow this question for the life of me.

They (the Knicks) were not contenders before Melo was hurt and Lin was placed into the starting lineup.

The biggest issue I have with anything is Melo, of all people, calling anything about anybody's contract rediculous.

Team made an offer to Lin, he accepted and up to this point New York has declined to match the offer even though they said Lin was staying no matter what (actually they said "for anything under a billion")

Knicks will already be paying the luxury tax anyway, i don't see how it will affect them that much unless they somehow found a way to trade amare. It is absolutely ridiculous for the rockets though, they would have cap room in year 3.

I don't think he should get flak for the 'ridiculous' part but he should have just kept his mouth shut. Talking about another player's contract, especially a potential teammate, just puts you in a bad position.

Well it's certainly not because they don't like Lin or don't want him back in New York. Melo was the one that got D'Antoni to insert Lin in the lineup to begin with. And if my memory serves me correct, Lin + Chandler + Melo had lunch together sometime last weekend.

They all want him back in New York.

Yep.

When you go back to the original article from the first post in this thread, it says that Anthony said that he wanted Lin back as a team mate, and referred to the contract that Houston put out there as "ridiculous". He didn't pass judgement on Lin; rather, he spoke directly about the contract.

And it should be noted that he was ASKED ABOUT IT. It's not like he went seeking out the media to put in his $.02.

I, for one, like it when athletes speak their minds and answer questions directly and honestly.

Why

Not

Why not

I like it when athletes respond honestly. I cannot stand athlete speak but it really comes off as tacky to comment on it even if you're asked. I'd be willing to believe Anthony meant "ridiculous" how ESPN would say a dunk is ridiculous but now jr smith has opened his mouth

But here's the thing:

Why the outrage from random fans?

Dude was asked for his opinion. He gave it. His opinion happens to coincide with management's...

According to some in this thread, it's because he holds onto the ball or doesn't play defense.

Ok but that's a question not an answer

I think the people showing outrage probably just do not like melo no matter what. I think this is the minority

I would think most people are taken aback because players almost never comment on a teammate's salary especially in the era of sports unions. It was quite common for players back in the day to give their opinions on this kind of stuff (joe namath's first contract) Not to mention from a guy making almost $70 M over 3 years.

Most athletes aren't asked a question specifically about a team mate's contract.

However, other players were asked about Drew Brees's contract, and they gave their opinions. They were fine with it.

This case is different because another team intentionally worded a contract so that the player in question COULD NOT sign with his original team without the original team suffering dire consequences. Anthony was asked about that, and IN HIS OPINION, he thinks that contracts like that are "ridiculous".

But this is the run of the mill answer. I could be wrong but I doubt Jeremy Lin's contract is the first to be designed like this. It a byproduct of restricted free agency. If it were just melo or just smith commenting I could call it that. Just a player being honest when he shouldn't be

But 2 players on the same team as Lin have had something, I guess negative, to say about this when I assume contracts like this happen all over the league. There is something more to it than the poison pill aspect and I'm not insinuating racial shite but there is more to it.

No, there really is nothing more to it other than the fact that it's in New York.

To use PJ's example ( ), if this was a player from, say, Sacramento, we wouldn't be hearing about it.

I think melo just comes off as a bit bitter since the Knicks got rolling while he was hurt and Lin was running the show. He returns and was blamed for the offense stalling again. I can't say I blame him there though.

This theory is so fricking stupid. Its melos team for better or worse, but he has gone out of his way to shower lin with praise. The thing lins teammates should pissed about was him being a bitch in the playoffs and not playing at 85% with the back court already decimated. Lin didnt play because he wanted that pay day, and if he sucked in the playoffs he wouldnt have gotten the big pay day. Bitch move.

For regular jobs, sure. In the entertainment world, which is what sports is, people have talked about each others' money all the time, especially when all the details are available for public consumption.

BTW, here's some perspective on this situation:

LINK

ETA: And the first comment after the article nails it:
quote:

Don't all the people who are mad at Dolan realize that Lin and his agent agreed to this offer sheet knowing it would screw the Knicks?

I would add that the people who are bashing Anthony need to realize this, and THAT is what Anthony is talking about.

I'm not sure if the numbers are right but Sheridan Hoops says with his contract number and the additional luxury tax from it Lin's 3rd year would cost the Knicks over 50 mil.
