scandal

It’s been a quiet couple of weeks since the Cardinals-Astros hacking scandal came to light. Now, it appears, we have some news. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the St. Louis Cardinals have fired scouting director Chris Correa, after an “imposed leave of absence.”

It's not a safe few days for front office employees.

After a little while, this started to look more and more likely.

STL Post Dispatch columnist Joe Strauss has been saying for a while that the "prank" aspect and low level aspects are off base, based on what is known about the FBI investigation.

ETA: From the Post-Dispatch and STLtoday.com:
quote:

Correa has admitted hacking into a Houston Astros database but said it was only to verify whether the Astros had stolen proprietary data, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

The Cardinals should be contracted for this severe breach of integrity and the Astros should be given the first overall pick in the dispersal draft, which would probably add a couple years to their impending dynasty.

While completely implausible, it's an interesting premise. Who would you take 1? Wacha?

Would be a tough choice between Wacha and Martinez. Would be great for the Astros because they need an impact SP this year and beyond (considering Appel may not be that guy).

Death penalty for the Cardinals is the only fair punishment IMO. I also would add the Yankees onto that just for good measure.

I always thought this was the case. The FBI wouldn't be cracking down on them like this if it was just some low level interns pulling a prank

He was only hacking a few times to see if they stole information... he only looked at the files that may contain information on the Cardinals and he did not use any information he saw.

Does that mean Luhnow should've had his memory erased before accepting the Houston job? How can you steal information "prior to taking the job" if he was still working for the Cards

Yea that defense is pretty comical. Oh I thought they might of taken some of our stuff so I just helped myself to all their stuff. Nothing to see here.

It obviously had to be a director or higher. Not everyone in baseball ops would get access to these files (back when Lunhow was in STL).

The big wigs will almost always know about this, but they will be able to pin it on a single exec or high-level employee and move on. I would be shocked if Correa was the only one involved.

No, of course not but if he built a proprietary database for the Cardinals while in their employ and used the software/database when he moved to Houston that could be open to litigation depending on his employment contract with the Cardinals.

"Hacking to see if it was true" was and is idiotic and isnt an acceptable defense to me. If someone in the organization felt this was possibly the case then you take it up the chain and use proper channels to find the truth.

I'm glad he has been fired personally.
