It’s not happening this year as fans had hoped, but the biggest fight that can be made in boxing is coming to fruition.

USA TODAY Sports learned Wednesday that Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have verbally agreed to a Fall 2017 bout at 160 pounds.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya later confirmed the news in a tweet:

On Tuesday, Tom Loeffler came to @GoldenBoyBoxing's offices and we agreed that the mega fight between @canelo and GGG would occur next fall

— Oscar De La Hoya (@OscarDeLaHoya) June 22, 2016

Loeffler, who promotes Golovkin, visited the GBP offices in Los Angeles on Tuesday and struck a deal with De La Hoya, who promotes Alvarez.

CANELO: Ordered to pay $8.5M to former promoter

The Alvarez side has long balked at fighting GGG at the 160-pound limit, but that hurdle has been cleared. The Mexican star will fight on Sept. 17 at 154 pounds against an opponent to be determined and then will begin gradually moving up to 160.

Alvarez and Golovkin were in talks to fight this fall, but those talks stalled. Canelo was mandated by the WBC to defend his middleweight title against the undefeated Kazakh; instead, he vacated the title. It’s hoped that the delay will allow Golovkin to increase his marketability in the U.S. while Alvarez can more comfortably bulk up.

Golovkin holds two middleweight belts and has scored 22 consecutive knockouts. Alvarez, who is considered the face of boxing with Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao out of the picture, remains the lineal champ.

Oscar is making Canelo look like a joke smh. When Richard Schaefer ran GBP Canelo fought:

Trout - undefeated, had just beat Cotto
Lara - undefeated
Mayweather - TBE

Compare that to the opponents he's faced since Oscar took over:

Kirkland - washed up (w/o Ann Wolf)
Cotto - small
Khan -small

what? they booked the fight for a year and a half from now?

It'll never happen, there's too much shite to go wrong in that amount of time.

Boxing has become a joke, but I hear the competition has picked up in the last year or so.

Am I missing something? They say he voluntarily vacated his title but that he's the lineal champ.

How in the hell are you the champ if you vacated the title?

Canelo will be 26. Golovkin will be 36. I know Golovkin is a great fighter, but at what age do you guys think he will lose a step or two?

It's very smart for both guys to face similar opponents before they face each other.

It will be a super fight next year(fingers crossed) for fans like me. Really like the style match up.

I think Canelo gets his face bashed in. He offers nothing that will trouble GGG. Canelo is slow, has no stamina (takes 3-4 rounds off in every fight), has no proven power at 160 and he's short for 160. The only thing he offers is body shots but GGG will turn his face into ground meat with his jab before Canelo gets close enough to throw body punches.

GGG's best defense is his offense, he's very susceptible to counters which is Canelo's best attribute.

That's true to an extent, but one guy has great skills and the other guy has good skills. One guy is a big 160 and the other guy is an inflated 154. And it's easier to counter fighters with no power compared to those that can stretch you out on the canvas with one punch. And I think you're underestimating GGG's counter punching. Daniel Geale certainly knows all about it.

Canelo has fought two guys with a really good skillset: Mayweather and Lara. He got blown out by Mayweather and IMO he got a robbery win against Lara. Now GGG is a different fighter compared to those two, but he packs a HUGE punch and is certainly a lot more vicious in that ring. I think Canelo is in for a long night against Golovkin.

Personally I think movement and quickness give Canelo the most trouble, it's why I thought Khan had a chance against him.

You watching the Thurman - Porter fight? I know how much you hate Al Haymon.

Yep...and Khan was giving Canelo fits early on with his hand speed.

Oh yeah I've been wanting to see that fight for a while. Still don't know who I'm picking but I'll be pulling for Porter. Regardless of who the promoter or "adviser" is, I just want to see good fights and this is a good one. However, why has Haymon kept these guys on the sideline for so long? Porter has been inactive for a whole year and Thurman for 11 months. Sorry, I had to throw in a Haymon jab somewhere.

I know the fight was originally scheduled for March but that still would've given them 9 and 8 months of inactivity. No excuse for that. Oh and I'm not buying that Thurman "car accident" report for the first fight being postponed. There's definitely more to that story.

Here's to a good fight tonight
