On the radio today, there was a big debate on whether Calvin Johnson should be in the HOF. It reminded me of another receiver, Sterling Sharpe, that retired early (due to injury though), that never had any consideration cause he played such a short time. So I looked their numbers up and it is freaky how close the two of them are.

First, Sharpe only played 7 seasons compared to Johnson, who played 9. But this is what their totals are..

Sharpe
595 receptions, 8134 yards, 65 tds
He was also made 5 Pro Bowls, 3x All Pro

Johnson
731 receptions, 11,916 yards, 83 tds
He made 6 Pro Bowls, 3x All Pro

If you break that into season averages..
Johnson- 81/1324/9
Sharpe- 85/1162/9

Neither really ever won anything and both only played in two playoff games (Sharpe- 11/229/4, Johnson- 17/296/2). So that doesn't help either one.

Given the fact Sharpe never even sniffed a ballot. I don't see how Johnson is considered a lock. Do those extra two years really mean that much?

This is a clown question.

Megatron should make the hall of fame along with Andre Johnson.

Sharpe was damned good. Five Pro Bowls in a row, over 100 catches twice.

3500 yards and 20 TDs is a pretty nice separation

It seems like a lot of great receivers from the '90s and early '00s have been completely forgotten. I remember the Jacksonville Jaguars having a receiver by the name of Jimmy Smith who was the absolute truth. He torched my favorite team, Baltimore Ravens every single year. But since the day he retired, nobody brings up his name unless they're talking about the Ravens CB.

That 1999 Jags offense was amazing. Smith, Keenan McCardell, Kyle Brady, Fred Taylor, Mark Brunell. That group could put points up quickly.

As for the question in the OP, IMO they should both be in, but Calvin Johnson is almost a lock to get in.

I think that they should both be in the HoF.

Sharpe played from 1988-1994.

Comparing numbers from that era when defense was still winning titles from the Bears to the Giants...

To the pass-happy Goodell basketball on grass league is asinine.

Football has changed so much the last 15 years for pro, pro, pro-offense...hinder defense.

Joe Montana got knocked out of a playoff game against the Giants...today, they would suspend and fine that same player for hitting Brady above the waist.

Doing what Sharpe did in the cold in that hard-nosed era of real defense and decapitating receivers when they weren't looking.

Is more impressive than playing indoors where defenders can't take your head off or even touch you.

This is the definition of Hall of very good.

Unfortunately no Hall of Fame.

Megatron on his game was a beautiful thing, HOF worthy regardless of how his stats end up stacking up.

IMO Andre is almost HOF but not quite. Megatron has had some outstanding seasons. Including his 2nd year on the 0-16 Lions team in which he had 78 receptions for 1331 yds and 12 TDs despite having 4 different awful QBs throwing to him. Should've made a Pro Bowl that year for sure.

Calvin Johnson doesn't belong in. Unpopular opinion but it's true.

If you're going to put in Gale Sayers then you have to put in Sharpe and possibly Megatron. Sharpe is sadly forgotten, 5 All Pros in six years! That's as many as Michael Irvin with twice the career length.

The put in Sayers because of injuries...so why not Sharpe too??

They do, but it isn't just that IMO. Megatron is #2 all time in receiving yards per game. His receiving TDs are still a bit of a head-scratcher to me though. 122 catches, 1964 receiving yards, and only 5 measly TDs in 2012. Tied for 40th in the league. How the hell does that happen with one of the greatest seasons and red zone threats in the last 25 years?

I believe there was an anomaly that year like 5+ times caught inside the 2

Peter King has said that stuff doesn't matter as much anymore.

There's a backlog of 90's receivers and people who vote and cover the game realize numbers don't mean the same now as they did in the 70's, 80's and even 90's to some degree.

So you can roll out numbers and act like they compare from when football was still football and you won't get much takers. This isn't chess or even baseball, things changed dramatically.

It's why some bad numbers guys got in...they played in the deadball era...the 70's.

8 of the greatest defensive teams statistically in the history of the NFL...played in the 1970's - think about that for a second.

9 of the greatest offensive teams statistically played in the last 15 years.

That's why Swann is in, Stallworth, Branch should be in, Kurt Warner should probably not be in, and same with 5-yard Wes Welker.

Id like to see both get in. Megatron is a lock because he was the best at his position for most of his career.

Sharpe was great but never the best of his day. That was Jerry rice. I would however put sharpe alongside guys like Irvin and Tim Brown, who are hofers.
