Buzz building around Darrelle Revis and the New England Patriots

From Volin: “One league executive said the Patriots ‘are the only team that makes sense’ to sign Revis.”
Now, of course, the reasoning for such thinking is not the typical line of thought for an available cornerback on the free-agent market.
“Not many teams have a need for an expensive, aging cornerback with questionable work ethic,” Volin added. “But Belichick could get the most out of Revis and find a way to use him — maybe not as a starting cornerback, but certainly as a depth piece at corner or strong safety.”
If Revis does sign somewhere, the Jets would be on the hook to pay the difference in his salary under $6 million, so teams will have an incentive to take a flyer on the player who was once the best cornerback in the NFL.
The topic of a Patriots reunion with Revis was also covered by the Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian over the weekend. She noted that when Revis was a member of the Patriots, “word has it, the idea of moving to safety came up the last time there was a negotiation between the two sides, and Belichick shot it down because he didn’t think Revis’ skills translated to the position.”

They could easily get him on the cheap. Not to mention, this could be seen as a mentor role for the younger secondary members on the team (specifically Gilmore). Especially if they ship Butler to NOLA.

They'll sign him for nothing, move him to cover the slot, and trade Malcolm Butler for a 1st round pick. Book it!

I could see it, only problems are 1.) he would basically be playing for free since the Jets owe him 6 mil that offsets
2.) he talked some dumb shite on his way out the door last time.
And he would have to accept a reduced role

I don't get it. He offers the Patriots close to nothing as a strong safety (they ask their strong safety to creep into the box and play linebacker) and he wouldn't beat out Gilmore, Rowe, or Butler as a CB.

PFT reported that during the 2015 contract negotiation BB flat out told Revis that his skills don't translate to safety
Belicheck loves chess pieces tho, and I think he could find a role to make him successful again, if Revis buys into that smaller role.

Pats also have the walking disaster known as Cyrus Jones in the mix at corner
There's a couple young guys they like such as Jonathan Jones and Justin coleman. Imo Jones could be a decent corner in the league and Coleman is terrible.

Can't Revis just sit on his arse, do nothing, and still collect $6MM ?
Posted on 3/20/17 at 2:23 pm to navy
Yeah, it's up to him if he wants to play this year. But he probably won't be able to sit on his arse and come back next year so he has to decide if he still wants to play football or not

The Jets have to pay for him anyways. If NE can get anything out of him it would be a solid move.

Fwiw I don't think Butler gets moved unless the Saints are dumb enough to do it for the 11th overall pick.

Cyrus was awful as a returner, but I didn't really think he was terrible as a CB, given his small sample size.

Still needs a 2nd year leap. He's got the measurables to be a great slot corner.
If he goes back to return then I might choke someone

Just making the Jets pay for him is reason enough. Belichek loves screwing the jets over.

Fun fact before this offseason, Belicheck had made trades with 29 out of the 31 other teams since BB became the HC in 2000. They trade earlier this offseason with team number 30, the colts to get Dwayne Allen, first trade since 1987 between those two teams.
The lone holdout left? The Jets. Last trade between the Pats and the Jets was to trade Bill Belicheck to the Pats.

I'm not gonna say never, but I have my doubts. Revis looked slow last year, getting beat badly down the field.
For comparison sake:
quote:
According to The Ringer's Mike Lombardi, free agent Darrelle Revis remains unsigned because Revis "has not really taken care of his body" and "looked slow" on game tape last season.
Lombardi pointed to 38-year-old Terence Newman as a cornerback who has taken care of himself late in his career, whereas 31-year-old Revis has not. "He played slow. He looked slow," said Lombardi. "Players that gain weight during their career fall off the Earth." Also noting Revis had "two massages a week" during his time in New England, Lombardi believes "no one is going to take the $6 million burden off the Jets," referring to Revis' $6 million in offset guarantees. "I think Revis is begging for a job." Retirement is squarely in play for Revis.

For comparison sake:
quote:
Vikings re-signed CB Terence Newman to a one-year, $3.25 million contract.
Newman, Carson Palmer, Jason Witten, Terrell Suggs, and Anquan Boldin are the only five players left in the league from the 2003 draft. Newman turns 39 later this year but is still playing at a high level thanks to, what he says, is red wine. Newman was PFF's No. 9 cover corner out of 120 qualifiers last season. The Vikings are hoping inconsistent 2015 first-round pick Trae Waynes will win their left corner position, but Newman has outplayed Waynes the past two years.
