If I have an elite roster, he is not a Top 5 coach I want. I'm sorry. I would take both Van Gundys, Pop, Carlisle, Kerr, Bud, McHale, Spoelstra, Kidd, and more. He's not a player's coach, and that has started to be revealed by players saying things to the media.
A players coach is what an elite roster needs. Thibs might be the best coach at getting the most out of a bad roster, but that doesn't mean much when the goal is championship.
Bruh. The Van Gundys? Steve couldnt get his 1 superstar to like him and got canned and now is doing a subpar job (so far) with the Pistons. I like steve though. Jeff hasn't been a coach in almost a decade.. You can't really count him.
Kerr and Bud have had pretty good success so far but they are also relatively unproven. Kerr inherited a completely STACKED team and Bud just choked hardcore in the playoffs.
McHale? Come on. Dude is a puppet
Spo? I like Spo but he lost LeBron and gained Luol Deng. Had almost the same team this year as he did this year and he STILL couldn't make the playoffs in a very watered down East. Did he have to deal with the Bosh injury? Sure. But when bosh went down they were still below .500 and they got Dragic to come in right afterwards and still couldn't reach the playoffs.
Kidd was terrible with the Nets but he's doing a pretty good job with the Bucks so far but still not doing anything special.
Out of all the guys you named none of them (Besides maybe Bud or Kerr.. still unproven) are on the level of Thibs.
quote:
Noah, Butler, Gasol. They have tons of talent. Tons.
They just got Gasol THIS year and Butler just became an all star THIS year. And this year they won 50+ games and were considered one of the favorites to come out of the East until they ran into some guy named LeBron James who just so happens to be a top 5 player of all time still in his prime
Thibs has developed Noah and Butler into ELITE defenders and overall great players. Oh and Pau Gasol (34) just had one of his best seasons of his career under Thibs. I'm sure Thibs had nothing to do with that though
quote:
I think most would have Spo up there. A lot of people would have Doc (I'm not as high on him.) I think Frank Vogel is up there. Kerr, Bud, Joerger, Hornaceck, and Kidd have all had relatively great early success. SVG is up there.
Vogel? Nah. He is lucky he didn't get fired last season after the shite show he did with his Pacers in the playoffs.
I think we are on the same page with Doc. Dude is super overrated.
Joerger has done good.
I get that all the young guns are doing good so far but they still haven't done enough to surpass Thibs.

This year was their best collection of offensive talent in the Thibs era. And I'm amazed that Snell doesn't get more minutes with the Bulls.

Personally I'd say taking the worst team in the league to the playoffs in your first despite losing the number 3 overall pick in the first month of the season is pretty special.

One of the main negative things I've been hearing about him is his loyalty to the vets. People have been wanting him to give Whiteside more minutes.

It's hard to say taking a team in the East to .500 is "special"
I agree he's doing a good job but it's the same thing with Brad Stevens. Did he do a great job with what he has? Hell yeah.
but at the end of the day. They are still .500 or below teams in a very top heavy conference that got eliminated in the 1st round.
If yall are saying them doing that with their teams is special then you have to give Thibs props for getting the Bulls to the top #1 seed and conference finals in his 1st season and getting his team to a top 4 seed the last couple of years without his Superstar and no other offensive threat being able to play.
Blatt just took the team with the #1 lottery pick last year to the NBA Finals.
I don't see anyone sucking his dick

You know you're wasting your breathe right?
Just to add though... while we're wasting our breathe, Kerr also hired Thibs' right hand man which lead to such a dramatic turn around in defense.
I've concluded that some of these guys definition of a great coach is to have great players and be an outstanding baby sitter.

They still made it to the conference finals and did surprisingly well with the roster he had to deal with this season. Plus now seeing what Lance Stephenson did to the Hornets it seems like he deserves a bit more credit who what he did there the last couple of seasons.

I think the best way I could put it is like this: When I used to list off the best coaches in the NBA I would say Pop, Carlisle, and Thibs without question. Now it is Pop and Carlisle then a bunch of guys. I honestly can't figure out where to place Thibs among them because it is so early on in some of the guys careers.
Like I favor some guys like Kerr, Bud, and Stevens, but they could all turn out to major busts in a few years.

Dramatic? They were 3rd in defensive efficiency last season....

I mean that is a very large part of the job

You're right...I was wrong on the defensive turn around point.

Mike Malone is also a fantastic defensive mind. That's all I take from that.

It's intellectually dishonest or stupid to compare the Celtics to the Cavs.

Who is Steve? Once is a mistake. Twice is not knowING what you're talking about.

Mike Malone was in Sacramento last season
Posted on 5/28/15 at 5:20 pm to bwallcubfan
Word is Lakers will pursue him.
Posted on 5/28/15 at 5:21 pm to Galactic Inquisitor
Haha my mistake STAN
and if you don't think Hawks choked hardcore during the end of the regular season and the playoffs you obviously weren't watching.
He didn't keep them up to par for the whole season and also made TERRIBLE adjustments during the playoffs

Dude, the Hawks lost their top 3 wings for the playoffs.

I'm just saying they jumped from 13 to 3rd without him.

Oh they did? Who?
