Coulda sworn Jay-Z owning .001% of the franchise was gonna turn that program around.

I guess using the Isaiah Thomas model for franchise building hasn't worked out.

Avery Johnson isn't a bad coach at all... People forget what he did for the Mavs, and he had the Nets trending in the right direction (yeah the slippage was bad, but I'd blame the players more than him).

Left so they could win? That was nice of him.

although they lost to his mentor in the first round the Mavs he did coach them to the best record in the league and got hosed out of a championship

Deron Williams is a bitch. Almost all of the "stars" are pussies in the NBA these days. The only star I can respect and watch when I'm not watching the Hornets is Kevin Durant.

There are very few difference making coaches around the league. Carlisle, Pop, Thibs, Doc, and Adelman are the only ones that come to mind. Unless they get SVG or Phil, this seems like a knee jerk reaction. The Nets have bigger personnel problems IMO, as opposed to coaching problems.

Could they have waited it out? Sure. But what really was there to lose by making a change? The seed was already planted and the player/coach separation starting becoming bigger than the team. They'd only be delaying the inevitable.

Now with that said, I don't think Avery is a bad coach... he sucked there and just wasn't a good fit. At the end of the day it's all about results... and the New Jersey and Brooklyn Nets weren't getting it done. Larry Brown was a very good coach... but he sucked in a lot of places too.

The difference is that you can hire and fire coaches at will while you can't easily rid yourself of shitty contracts to Wallace, Humphries, Joe Johnson, etc.

If it is a locker room problem and there is a huge disconnect between Avery and Deron and the team then I agree. But the Jazz offense comment to Utah media reporters was overblown and didn't show a complete lack of respect to Avery or anything. But if there was more going on behind the scenes it would make sense.

But he wasn't the huge failure in NJ that you and others are making him out to be. He never had the talent until this year and he overachieved with his team for one month then underachieved another. Leaving them with around the record most would have predicted.

New owner, new city, new stadium... expectations were really high. So in a sense, being a .500 team has been a huge failure. I don't entirely blame Avery for their failures as there are a bunch of players underacheiving right now... but they gave him a lot of talent and wanted him to win immediately. In a way, he was kind of set up to fail so it has been a little unfair for him.

But once again, it's all about results. Whether or not the cards were stacked against him to begin with, he failed. His players failed. The GM failed. The owner failed. There's enough blame to go around. As another poster pointed it, it's easier to replace the coach and unload a bunch of bad contracts.

And on paper, without hindsight being 20/20, I doubt many would have predicted their record being where it is. It's looks like it's suppose to be much better than a .500 team.

Good you don't know how frustrating it is watching Deron Williams run off screens and running Isolations for Gerald Wallace

So if they're 16-12 they don't fire Avery? 2 games? That's why it's a knee jerk reaction.

I pointed that out in the beginning of the thread. The problem is the GM who constructed the team isn't fired and is leading the coaching search. If King has convinced Prokhorov that they are a 50 win team and should be in the ECF like he said then they have much bigger problems than Avery.

And honestly if teams around the league still view Deron as a star and could get a good return they should have cashed out there. But like you said, with the new city/brand they are attached to Deron I guess. Nets can't compete when they're paying Deron and JJ a combined 40 million a year or whatever it is. Dallas dodged a bullet when they didn't get him for a max contract.

They probably still do... and this goes back to the player/coach relationships I mentioned earlier.

Maybe he should and will get fired too... but it's usually the coach that goes first. Throwing their salaries aside, I really like the way the team was constructed. A bunch of vets who at stage in their career, are ready to win.

PG - Deron Williams, CJ Watson
SG - Joe Johnson, Marshon Brooks
SF - Gerald Wallace
PF - Kris Humphries, Andray Blatche, Reggie Evans
C - Brook Lopez

Call me crazy but that looks like a well constructed team. They all fit their profile... not a bunch of tweeners.

I think he would have worked really well with Carlisle. One of my favorite coaches. And honestly though... you think Prokhorov cares that much about going over the cap if he really wanted someone?

Jemelle Hill of ESPN says this was a racial firing citing no coach in NBA history has ever been the reigning coach of the month winner and black and been fired. Also, losing 10 of 12 is irrelevent.

Maybe Williams will decide where he wants to play and who he wants to coach sometime before he retires.
