This board for decades has operated in the smoke and the shadows, thumbing its nose at public records and open meetings laws, discouraging conversation among board members in the light of day. It has operated with a patrician's belief that it knows best, answering only to itself.

These trustees, remember, are given the extraordinary power to re-appoint themselves and their successors. They are a self-perpetuating body. Which means less-opinionated and less-powerful trustees can go along, or they can get along out the doorway.

Recently, a Bill was introduced to expand the board by four members (less than 20%). These four members would be the only ones who would be appointed by people other than those who already sit on the board.

The BoT reacted by hiring a PR firm to fight the Bill and the President of their alumni org sent a letter claiming the Bill was about hurting UA Academics.

Why post this you ask?

Because, years from now all this will come home to roost. Right now, Alabama fans love this untouchable, unaccountable board. But what happens when the tide turns and they cannot do anything about it? What happens when this board makes bad decisions and the fans suddenly realize their is zero accountability? Will we have another Logan Young?

AU had Bobby Lowder's involvement in the University threaten SACS accreditation. What happens when this board pushes the wrong choices for Alabama and they are powerless to do anything about it?

At the end of the day, this is about a power shift. Back room deals are harder to keep secret in the internet age. The political machine at UA is weakening. Black people are pushing the Greek System and all of that is a good thing.

Some Alabama fans will blindly defend anything related to Alabama, but the times will change. All it takes is one Shula...

Because they do a lot of good for The University of Alabama. In 2013, there were 34,852 undergrads attending the school - the most in its history. There were 6,478 incoming freshmen - the most in school history. Of that number, nearly 2,000 of them came in with a 4.0 high school GPA or higher. The average ACT score for the '13 freshman class was almost a 26 - the highest in UA history.

Under their watch the quality of education has grown by leaps and bounds. The school can now boast two of the best business and law schools in the entire country.

The university has added new residence halls, a new student rec center, and is still planning future projects for the benefit of the students and their education.

So, yeah....they can continue to operate from the "shadows" if that means continued growth and success for my alma mater.
