Blind kid gets his Make-A-Wish granted; may be an impermissible benefit

NCAA (reddit link)
quote:
Jake Olson has battled cancer all his life. As an infant it took one of his eyes. It came back when he was 10. Before he went blind his wish was to see USC play one last time. USC and Make-A-Wish made this happen. He was given a ride on the team plane, gear... all the kind of stuff that makes Make-A-Wish events happen special.
Now he's old enough to play and wants to walk on to the USC football team as a longsnapper. NCAA has spent months deliberating, trying to determine if the Make-A-Wish event counts as an impermissible benefit.

A new all-time low for the NCAA. Impressive

The NCAA has ruled that t-shirt cannons are just high-velocity violation machines.

Such a lack of institutional control at USC.

To give further information, the NCAA is deliberating on whether he should get a waiver to be on the football team as a walk-on because he's at USC on a "Swim With Mike" scholarship which is given to disabled athletes.
Which is still ridiculous.

Even FIFA thinks the NCAA is a corrupt organization that doesn't give a frick about the athletes that they govern.

Christ almighty.
Frickin NCAA.
I assume this is the kid featured on ESPN before. Was he the one the lee corso tried to shake his hand?

Even Jake Wilson can see how stupid the NCAA is being.

That just might make it even worse. "Sorry kid, your disability is a clear financial advantage that creates a violation situation". Jesus, NCAA.

Ever hear the one about the drunk coach and the blind long snapper?

USC needs the death penalty.
You let this slide and before long, high schoolers will be blinding themselves to get to ride on the team plane. Just can't have this stuff.

I can kind of see the NCAA's point here. After all, there are hundreds of 10-year-olds out there who are world class athletes and have cancer. That's the real reason USC let him on the team plane--so he'd come play for them when he was 18.
