Even though the NCAA Tournament is eight months away, we've got a hefty update on some upcoming changes. One twist coming next season: The No. 1 overall seed will be able to choose the location of its first two games of the tournament. So if that team is Duke, or Kentucky, or Kansas, or whichever school gets put atop the 1-68 seed list, that program will get to pick where it plays its first and second-round games. "Preferences would be communicated by teams in contention for the overall No. 1 seed far in advance of Selection Sunday in a process to be determined," the NCAA said in a statement. This means a handful of teams will look at all eight first-weekend sites and let the selection committee know which one it prefers. The top-seeded program won't know which team(s) it'll be playing, but it will get dibs on digs, which is a nice little update.

i guess this is due to kansas getting sent to louisville instead of chicago, or whatever it was.

It probably won't make much difference. Top seeds got seeded generously according to site anyway, with few exceptions.

Duke and UNC have played in Greensboro or Raleigh many times.

Kentucky has been in Louisville.

Kansas in Omaha, KC, etc.

This won't really do anything except add a delay in knowing who plays where.

Per the link, the top few teams in contention will look at the sites ahead of time and let the committee know what they want if selected. So there shouldn't be a delay.

I always think it's a good idea to tweak something that is massively popular with gimmicks.

If only they could get some fan voting into choosing the #1 seed, the process would be fantastic.

I'm assuming they are "ranking" their preferences?

How do you honor two teams if they both select the same site as their top choice?

Because only one of them will end up being the #1 overall seed.

Sorry. I read the title of the thread and skimmed the quoted article. Assumed all 4 #1's were getting to pick...not the overall #1.

Yeah I mean it makes sense. Not the first time Kansas has been "screwed" by that. Just let the team pick instead of acting like you are putting them where they wanna be when you actually aren't.

ETA: also misread since you are just picking your first weekend location. You could argue we wanted St. Louis over Des Moines though but not nearly as important a change as I thought. My bad.

If I was Kentucky, I'd pick a place like Greensboro, that forces somebody like Duke to go to Hartford.
