Closers are getting AAVs of over $15 million on long term deal and these guys pitch 60/70 innings in a season. #3 starters like Samardzija and Leake got similar AAVs last winter but they give you ~200 innings per year. How can a game that is so analytically oriented have so many dumb money decisions ?

BEcause when the average score of a game is like 4-3, you absolutely have to have a lockdown closer. It's vital. Those 60-70 innings are the difference between playoffs and 70-92.

To be fair, most teams are moving away from paying big bucks to closers. The few elite closers are the only ones pushing 15 mil. There are some teams with money burning a hole in their pocket and will do whatever they have to to get the guy they want.

are these franchises broke??? It's called economics and supply and demand. Did you pay attention to how Cleveland won in the post-season???

200 inning pitchers are going to become more and more rare so relievers of all roles are becoming more important.

The future of pitching is more 4 and 5 inning starts by your 3-5 starters. Stats show most mediocre to bad pitchers start getting crushed 3rd time thru lineup. You will see more teams doing what Tampa has done.

A lockdown closer is worth that given all the money MLB is making. Problem is there are not that many true lockdown closers

I think teams are realizing how valuable dominant relievers can be during the postseason when managers are really able to leverage their usage. Look at the prospect capital that was moved at th deadline for Chapman, Miller, etc. Not saying 5/86 is an amazing deal, but Brian Chapman isn't a dummy.

Regardless of IP a great reliever is worth far more than an average starter. Especially if that reliever can get you more than 3 outs in the playoffs

Did you watch the San Francisco Giants last year? Additionally, as we saw in the playoffs a guy like Andrew Miller is invaluable.

You're an idiot! The Royals are the perfect example as to why a great bullpen is worth the money! Their starters were garbage, aside from Cueto. But all their starters had to do, was get through 5 innings with a lead, and it was all but game over from there on out.

The only thing more powerful than the even year bullcrap was a bad bullpen

You've got a lot to learn kid.

No, the retards are the Rockies and the Nationals.
Nationals gave up way too much for Eaton, and Rockies paid a guy 17million, who is 31, and isn't anything special.
Both screwed the market, on value of trades and price for OF/1b.
I told you Chapman would get 17-17ish tops. And there were morons on here claiming he would get 20mil per, lol.

Leverage. Closers DO add more value because those innings are more valuable under LI and WPA. A great closer actually IS worth the money, but there's the rub, finding a consistent closer, much less a great one, is nigh on impossible. They are fairly erratic, taken as a group.

Which is why I say welcome your new St Louis Cardinals center fielder Harrison Bader, starting in Mid 2017 instead of 2018.

These guys are getting paid for what they can do if their team makes the post season.
Did you see what's Andrew Miller did in the playoffs? Those days off in the middle of a series make a good closer exponentially more valuable. They can pitch in every game. Converted starters like Chapman and Miller can go 2 or 3 innings if needed.

All innings are not created equal. Expect Chapman to come in for more 4,5 and 6 out saves.
