quote:

Now that Rex Ryan has been shown the door in Buffalo, Bills defensive lineman Marcell Dareus has criticized his former coach, saying Ryan’s scheme was “too much detail for a lot of guys.”

Bart Scott, who played for Ryan, couldn’t disagree more.

“That might sum the whole thing up – because that’s the guy that you gave $100 million,” Scott said on CBS Sports Radio’s The DA Show. “Instead of reading his play book, he was too busy lighting up. Are you serous? First of all, I’ve been in this system my entire career. Eleven years, I’ve been in this system. As a defensive lineman, you only have like four (or five) fronts. Man, if you can’t remember five fronts, I don’t know what to tell you, bro. We can’t put the play book in crayon."

I think Bart imagined the part where Dareus said it was too complicated for him.

too much detail for a lot of guys

Dareus played in a scheme in college more complex than Ryan's if they're only running 4 or 5 fronts

No, Saban doesn't run a complex system. He uses superior talent, not a superior system, especially not with the brains his players have.

Okay pal. I guess that's why Bill Belichik employed him as a defensive coordinator for years. He's called Saban the best defensive mind in the game

quote:

Last week, former Alabama safety Mark Barron said his alma mater operates a lot like an NFL franchise. “It might be even more complicated. Well, actually, I know for a fact that it’s more complicated than a lot of NFL systems,” the now-Los Angeles Rams linebacker added in an appearance on CBS Sports Radio’s After Hours with Amy Lawrence on Friday.

But why should we trust Mark Barron's opinion when we have the opinion of a salty LSU fan

Perhaps Dareus had enough awareness to realize that guys at other positions on the defense were struggling.

The fronts are simple but the Blitzes and calls are rocket science. You have multiple LSU and Bama guys talking about it. They change terminology so much it gets confusing. The details like that is what makes it so great.

The most complicated parts of the defense are that the coverages are fluid. There's a lot of "give this look but you're playing this coverage, and if the receivers do this then you have to change to this coverage on the fly"

It's a big reason Alabama is prone to the deep ball when they're playing inexperienced guys in the secondary. The blitzes he runs now aren't as elaborate as they were in his LSU days and early Bama days, but that's really because he has the horses up front to get pressure with 4. The coverage details are as intricate as any level of football. There is terminology and detail in there that some D1 head coaches can't comprehend, much less some salty slap dick on tigerdroppings

Reuben Foster loves crayons, though.

at least Reuben can color between the lines, which is more than we can say about Carnell Williams

It's funny that's hard to comprehend for you. He's legitimately one of the best defensive coaches of all time. Yes. His level of knowledge about defensive football far exceeds what many of them are capable of. You think that Hugh Freeze and Gus Malzahn have ever even pondered some of the shite that Saban teaches on defense? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here. We're talking about a guy that dictates how many spare helmet buttons the equipment manager keeps in his fanny packs, and you find it hard to believe that Saban is teaching defensive concepts that have never occurred to many (unqualified) division 1 head coaches.

You said can't even comprehend. I'm pretty sure that if saban sat down with any of those guys and explained what was going on, they would all understand it.
