Barry Bonds regrets the way he acted toward media and fans

"I'm to blame for the way I was [portrayed], because I was a dumbass. I was straight stupid, and I'll be the first to admit it," said Bonds, nodding in the visitors' dugout at Turner Field last week, when he was in Atlanta during his first year as the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins. "I mean, I was just flat-out dumb. What can I say? I'm not going to try to justify the way I acted toward people. I was stupid. It wasn't an image that I invented on purpose. It actually escalated into that, and then I maintained it. You know what I mean? It was never something that I really ever wanted. No one wants to be treated like that, because I was considered to be a terrible person. You'd have to be insane to want to be treated like that. That makes no sense.
"Hell, I kick myself now, because I'm getting great press [since being more cooperative], and I could have had a trillion more endorsements, but that wasn't my driving force. The problem was, when I tried to give in a little bit, it never got better. I knew I was in the midst of that image, and I determined at that point that I was never going to get out of it."
"The one thing that I would never, ever reflect on and talk about changing from the past is my ability with what I did out there on the field," Bonds said. "When it came to [preparing for and playing the game], I did that right. But as far as my attitude and the way I handled things, I just didn't do it the right way. There were times during my career when I really did try, but I wasn't given the benefit of the doubt, because I had already created the monster."

I like Barry. He did come across as an a-hole but this sounds genuine.

Greatest since Ruth....

In fairness, he was on a shitload of steroids at the time.

He was a dick to a Dodgers player LAST WEEK.

Solid introspection there. He always came across as someone that was just really unhappy. Hope he can find some peace for himself.

I kind of became anti-Bonds for the reasons he mentions. These comments make sense and seem genuine.
For Bonds, he was a Hall of Fame talent before the juicing. Then, everyone starts juicing with the owners fully supporting it. Bonds starts juicing and does it better than everyone else but the combination of his talent plus juicing plus arrogance was too much for everyone to take. Then, he gets blamed for the entire system.

How can you be the first to admit it 10 years later?

Damn, Barry. That's good stuff.

One of those guys, huh?
If you, or anyone else, that cries and moans about "cheating," don't believe that there are players in the Hall of Fame that didn't cheat their asses off in one way, shape, or form....I feel sorry for you and the rest for being incredibly naive and gullible.
Every game since the beginning of time has cheaters and will always have cheaters. You have to be an idiot to believe that professional players will do what they can to get a leg up someway. It will never end.

You wasted your time. I don't think that way at all, and I didn't say anything to indicate that I do. He is a proven cheater, and frick him for that. Not gonna apologize on behalf of people who earn their way fairly and honestly.

Bonds may have been an a-hole and a juicer but it's a fricking travesty he is not and likely never will be in the Hall of Fame.

Would be more believable if he didn't validate the bad stereotypes against him with Joc Peterson just a week or two ago

Does Pete deserve to be in?

"Regrets"
What he's regretting is seeing the HoF get farther and farther away, that's what he "regrets".

Word class a-hole Jeff Kent hated him, so I'd say he has the right enemies.
