Astros' current pace

At their current pace, the Astros are on track to finish 117-45 which would be the greatest regular season in MLB history in terms of number of wins. As a matter of fact, there have been only four teams in MLB history who have won more than 110 games in a season, the 54 Indians, the 1998 Yankees, the 2001 Seattle Mariners and the 1906 Chicago Cubs. The 1906 Cubs won at a 76% rate because of the 152 game season. The Astros are at a 72% clip so they're a little short of that, but they are currently on a blistering, historical pace.
This pace probably won't continue but it's still worth noting now that 1/3 of the season is complete.
As you would expect, they are currently tied with the Nationals for the best batting average in the entire MLB, and they are currently second behind the Dodgers for the best ERA in the entire MLB (they are first in both categories in the AL).

The Cubs were on a similar pace last year and they ended up cooling down to win "only" 103 games.

Could not care less about a regular season record. Do whatever puts us in the best position to win in the playoffs.

Very similar.
Astros are currently 42-16 (.724) and the Cubs were 41-17 (.706).

Yeah, they'll slow down. Players aren't thinking about winning 115 regular season games or whatever. When they're up 20 games in their division in mid-August, they probably won't have the same urgency and focus.
Still, this team is awesome and I wouldn't be surprised if they win 105+ games.

If the Yankees can win the East and anyone but Cleveland can win the Central, the Yankees will be in a great, great spot.
Cleveland/Boston in the wildcard game is probably worst-case scenario for the Astros.

I find it interesting that the Astros and Nats are the only two teams that are obvious, mortal locks for the playoffs at this point, yet both have enormous holes for October (3rd/4th SP and bullpen, respectively) and probably won't be anyones favorites in the playoffs, even now.

I mean, both Houston and Washington are definitely in most people's top 3-4 favorites. I'd throw in Cleveland and the dodgers to round out my top 4.

Cleveland and Dodgers would be the top two, I agree. Cleveland in particular is built like an October team.
