Anyone who follows Tulane baseball...
Posted by MetArl15 on 3/26/13 at 9:19 pm00
Is there any talk about replacing Jones? I know he made the program, but they have struggled in recent years. As for what they showed tonight, I realize they are injury-plagued, but the team seems pretty devoid of talent. Don't get me wrong, I generally am indifferent about the success of their overall sports program, but it is a little more fun during baseball season when they can constitute a quasi-rival for LSU. Just curious about the vibe around the baseball team.

was a great rivalry...so much fun in the late 90s/early 2000s
That team is embarrassingly bad. The kid who was 0 for his career was incapable of making a quality swing. It was like watching the poor kid in little league who can't keep his back foot still.
How in the world does that dude get playing time in this game? This wasn't like playing Nicholls, or Centenary. There must be at least 4-5 teams in LA better than Tulane...maybe more.

According to one of their signees dad that I sat by tonight, Jones will step aside and take an administrative job inside the athletic department at the end of the year. The Tulane fans around us said they couldn't wait for this to happen.

I used to really look forward to this series, but now its becoming like the football one. Tulane's program has really fallen behind since Maineiri took over.
I couldn't stop laughing about how the kid was a junior without a hit in his career. And then that play in the left field corner. Oh man. And to top it off they had shag carpet patches in the base paths and football lines in the outfield.

the program is a shadow of what it was in the late 90's to early 2000's

It is the culmination of a slow reaction to changes. Changes in scholarship rules, transfer rules, and rising cost of tuition. Not excuses. A lot of schools have had to deal with the same issues and are doing well. Tulane is just not thinking creatively like the others to combat the issue.
I have not heard any calls for Jones's head but I'm sure some are thinking it. It'd be tough to get someone credible to take this job at this point...which is sad.

Too bad that story wasn't true. The kid they were talking about was Max Goodman right?

Prior to Tulane 2012 (Florida State College): Appeared in 46 games for the Blue Wave and head coach Chris Blaquiere...boasted a .275 batting average (44-for-160) with four doubles and one triple...drove in 20 RBI and scored 28 runs to help FSC to a 19-31 record...stole 11 bases on 13 attempts...owned an on-base percentage of .361 with 18 walks and four hit-by-pitch
2011 (Miami Dade College): Appeared in 17 games for the Sharks and head coach Danny Price...helped them to a 33-18 record...posted a .353 batting average (12-for-34) with two doubles, one triple and one home run...scored 11 runs and plated 11 RBI...stole three bases in four attempts...owned an on-base percentage of .465 with seven walks and one hit-by-pitch.
ETA:
It may be true for a kid who batted in the 8th, Chmaberlain-Simon. He's just a bullpen catcher

Tulane used to be a top transfer school or 1 stop hop on the way to the MLB, as well as puling in at least a couple of the top kids instate.
Have to give credit to Mainieri. Since the first day he stepped foot on campus, his number one priority was to lock up Louisiana kids. Ever since 07' the talent pool of Tulane has decreased lineally.

Not if there was a promise of administrative support. But if they won't support Jones, why would they help a new guy?

He did look terrible, but as I pointed out he's gotten plenty of hits in college.

quote:There may be. Tulane has lost to Nicholls, split with Northwestern St. and UNO. They've also beat Southeastern 2 of 3.

Definitely.
I kind of felt bad for the kid. It's bad enough he's out there playing terribly and then Swoboda is just getting the facts wrong making him look even worse.

he is not getting the caliber of players that he once got from the New Orleans area
That's true, but they'd be ok if that was the only problem.
His best teams weren't really built around NOLA guys. In '05 they had Manzella, Southard, and Madden who all became really good players, but it's not like they were highly touted. I don't think Lsu wanted a single one of those guys. And that team was great because of Bogusevic + Owings neither from New Orleans.
I don't think 2001 had much New Orleans talent either.
