Would make more sense to me if it was about the Braves.

Lost 7 of first 8 World Series games (91 & 92) by 1 run.

Won 104 games in 93 (Lost in NLCS)

Won first two games of 96 WS by a combined score of 16-1

Then never won another WS game.

Also the 97 NLCS game umpired by Eric Gregg deserves an hour of its own.

The Braves were the best team in baseball in 1997. They never recovered from Eric Gregg and game 5.

Watched it. Excellent show. Almost started to feel bad for Cleveland fans. Made it even better that the Cubs twisted the knife in last season.

Baseball America put it in their top 3 worst called games ever.

According to the documentary, the umpire in Game 6 of the 1995 World Series was horrendous as well; giving Glavine five inches off the outside corner to righties.

Not going to start a thread, anybody watching the next one on the 1967 Red Sox? Pretty good. I wish we could go back to the days of a true pennant chase. Must have been something. Playoffs, Wild Cards, have kind of cheapened things a bit.

Kige that. They were screwed by Gregg but the strike zones M & G regularly received were a great argument for computerized strike zones. There is supposed to be both a relationship between the rule book strike zone and consistency from pitcher to pitcher.

Maddux got it most of his career. He was a phenomenal pitcher but didn't need that help. In the playoffs, constant pitches were called strikes that were a foot off the plate. Constantly. Just because the catcher framed way outside.

Umps in the 90's sucked and acted like NBA refs - anything to grow the game - traveling doesn't exist, etc.

Maddux isn't the first pitcher in the world to get preferential treatment and a giant strikezone but he sure got one in the 90's. His pitches would be a foot off the plate...but as long as they were the right level, it was a strike. And batters through the 90's were like, my bat isn't that long...I've never seen a bigger strike zone than Maddux got. He was unhittable because half his strikes were way off the plate.
People talk about Livan Hernandez but watch some old Maddux clips. The strikes aren't even close to being strikes...but they are strike level. A foot outside. He struck out a lot of batters by pitching around them because he got away with it.

Back to the Indians' topic, they had one of the greatest hitting lineups ever assembled maybe of all time. Jacobs Field used to absolutely rock in the 90s. They sold out all the time. It's crazy to think that core never won a World Series.

The Braves should never ever complain about umpiring. Now, Maddux and Glavine were great and could throw it through a pin hole, but damn they'd get 5-6 inch off the plate strike calls.
