After a 20-year-long circus of financial instability, weak fan support and arena uncertainty, it appears the NHL is down to its last breathe with the flailing Arizona Coyotes franchise. In a three-page letter sent to state Senate President Steve Yarbrough on Tuesday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman threatened to move the struggling club to a different part of Arizona if $225 million in public funding for a new arena in Downtown Phoenix isn't approved. The note from Bettman is a last-ditch attempt to get SB-1149 passed, a proposed public funding bill that would provide money for the Coyotes' new arena, but doesn't currently have enough support to pass. "The Arizona Coyotes must have a new arena location to succeed. The Coyotes cannot and will not remain in Glendale," Bettman wrote.

The city of Glendale has done its part in trying to keep the team, reportedly paying the NHL more than $50 million to cover the Coyotes' large operating losses from 2010-13. The city later awarded an annual $15 million arena management fee to the Coyotes, but terminated that contract after an emergency city council meeting in 2015.

I feel Indianapolis would be great for a hockey team

Seattle makes the most sense and apparently the coyotes agree

Another? I thought it was well established the Coyotes were financially screwed.

Bring back the Nordiques!
Second choice, make them the Seattle Metropolitans. That would also force the NHL to give a certain division a better name.

That Nordiques logo was one of the best logos in sports imo

It was also fun to call them the Nodiques.

Seattle is the obvious fit as there's no NBA team to compete with. Milwaukee supports their AHL team really well and would be a good fit also. The NHL needs to keep a presence out west though

Interesting. I knew WNBA was still at Key Arena, but figured it would take a new arena to get another team. Who knew the Metropolitans won a Stanley Cup in Seattle? What is so bad about Coyotes arena?

With a team going to Vegas, I could see the people out West (non-Cali) still caring about hockey.
The decision to build an arena out in Glendale was bad in the first place. It's a fine facility, near U of Phoenix Stadium, but otherwise, there's nothing there. The arena is attached to a mall of some sort in the middle of the fricking desert.

they built the arena away from the people who go to the games, as bad as the Devil Rays in mlb.

quote:Yeah and you still have teams like Nashville and Chicago playing in the Western conference and making incredibly long road trips on a regular basis. The last thing the NHL needs is another franchise closer to the east coast than west.

I totally agree the Yotes were set for failure by moving to Glendale. I think they'd do fine in downtown Phoenix or maybe even Tempe near ASU. ASU's hockey program is doing well and garnering interest believe it or not.
But the NHL doesn't seem to want them in Arizona and it's just a matter of time I'm afraid
