Anonymous NBA GM admits to tanking

LINK

quote:

OUR TEAM ISN'T good enough to win and we know it. So this season we want to develop and evaluate our young players, let them learn from their mistakes -- and get us in position to grab a great player. The best way for us to do that is to lose a lot of games. This draft is loaded. There are potential All-Stars at the top, maybe even franchise changers. Sometimes my job is to understand the value of losing.

We're not alone. Look at the 76ers. Since the draft in June, I don't think they've signed a player or made a trade to add a legitimate player. A bunch of us realize that our teams aren't good enough talentwise to do anything. You're going to be bad. There's no way around it. And even if you finish 0-82, there's still a 75 percent chance you don't get the No. 1 pick. We're just going to take our lumps and hope our number gets called.

This is a distraction, they were talking to the 76ers GM the whole time.

This is clearly Ryan McDonough (Suns GM)

But there is nothing wrong with this.

I think it's probably Ryan McDonough. They shipped out Gortat to allow Len the minutes he needs to develop and gave away a bunch of crap they wouldn't build around going forward.

It's a sound business decision really.

"Well what about the fans? You lose them, you lose your revenue base." Yes in the short term you do. But you land a player like LeBron, Durant, Melo, etc... you more than make up for that years down the road.

In the NBA, getting one superstar player changes your entire franchise. Not only do they make your team better, but you potentially entice other major talents to join your franchise (granted a lot of this is dependent on city as well)

Barely missing the playoffs in the NBA puts you in a position where you get no value from your draft pick and you're sitting at home watching someone else win a ring.

Find your stars in the draft and prop them up with solid, role playing free agent veterans.

The Jazz are one of the teams I think is ok with being in the middle.

By the time those players develop, that GM and coach will be fired.

Congrats on your team-building.

Nothing wrong with developing the young players like Len and basically taking a mulligan for the year.

I wouldn't count on Stern's replacement letting them win the Wiggins lottery, though.

I know that sounds crazy, but if you're an NBA general manager like me, the last place you want to be is in the middle. There are only two outcomes there: Either make the playoffs and be first-round fodder for one of the premier teams or miss the playoffs and pick somewhere around 11th to 14th in the draft. Either way, the odds are that you stay in that middle range. It's a recipe for disaster.

As messed up as this is, you can't argue with it.

Right, because the owner isn't on the same page as the GM.

Don't have a single problem with what he said.

A part of me can picture Dan Gilbert saying this.
