Rest assured AJ will be cut next offseason when his dead money drops. Loyal or not, no way a 34y/o WR gets $17 mm in 2015. So in reality all of this is about one season and paying him $16mm. The dead money makes cutting him impossible so trade him or pay up.

Does a pro bowl season from AJ make that much of a difference? Is a $16mm 33yr/o WR producing a recent pro bowl level a necessity or a luxury for the 2014 Texans? Is mallet more or less of a risk than any of the top QB prospects? BOB may hate mallet for all we know and Lombardi and the Browns make a stupid offer to NE for Mallett instead.

I laugh at those in this thread that act like this is a preposterous scenario. It is admittedly very unlikely because of the financial side from NE's perspective and the PR side from Houston.

Joseph may be sunk cost
foster may be sunk cost
Cushing may be sunk cost

Watt's mega deal is looming very large. Some cap relief for 2015 may be more important than mcnair's loyalty. I don't get the impression BO'B will share mcnair's loyalty to past their prime players with huge cap numbers.

I think Foster and AJ will both be gone for the 2015 season, allowing them to sign JJ to the huge deal he deserves.

That sure is a whole lot of chicken little-ing going on there. It's the NFL, everything is fluid. The texans aren't going to just cut all their best players after a down year for the entire team. They will find a way to keep the best, young guys at the most reasonable price. Yes, there will be cap casualties, just like every other team. Yes, trading players is an option, though not an easy one.

There will be room for watt, he's not going anywhere. After we eat the Schaub deal, we will have more cap space bc we won't be paying a QB $14M/yr. they will structure watt's deal however they need to to make it work. These guys are pros and paid lots of money to figure these types of things out. Stop worrying like a little girl.

I think they could get Mallet or someone like him for less than a player like AJ

You don't trade away an elite NFL receiver for a backup who has shown NOTHING in the NFL. If they want Mallet, they could come up with a way better deal than giving up AJ

First I live in Houston but I am not a texans fan so there is no worrying for me

Second I am very interested in the business side of this and the texans are fascinating to me

Third i have faith in BOB, I have little faith in Rick Smith and it will be interesting to see if BOB changes the soft culture of the franchise

Once again, I heard a brief discussion about AJ and Mallett and it peaked my interest because there are a lot of layers to this scenario.

What is AJ's real value?
What is the reality of Mallett's ability?
How will the texans manage potential high sunk costs at QB, RB and WR and stay competitive?
What will they do with the first pick? This could have huge effects on the rest of the draft

FTR I am a Saints fan and their future cap situation could be far worse than what the texans are facing

It would surprise me if they couldn't figure out a better deal for Mallet, if that's who they want

I don't think NE wants to trade Mallett because he is Brady insurance

I think Cleveland could make a stupid offer to NE because they may want to draft away from QB. I am not sure Lombardi's group can survive waiting on a drafted QB to mature

The cap hit wouldn't be worth it to let either of those 2 guys go, and you won't get the kind of value in a trade you would expect because of their big contracts.
