While I was in HS, not only the entire town went, but so did a lot of Cowboy players and a lot of people from the surrounding towns.

But Southlake was also in the midst of winning 4 out of 5 state titles so they had a ton of local and national appeal.

I went to Southlake games when they were in 3A at the old Dragon Stadium. It was wild then. I remember the game at Pennington Field when they were playing Vernon (the next-to-last year before moving up to 4A).

They've always had tons of local support. I remember buying a program at a game -- I've seen smaller phone books.

Most small towns don't have the "whole town traveling" to every game. There are exceptions but It's a romantic myth about TX football. Places like Allen, Odessa, Southlake and Plano and others of that ilk have or had great programs and still pack a road game. Bit those are big schools with lots of supportive alumni spread out everywhere.

if you're trying to ever compare Texas and Louisiana football, remember, our 5A is their 4A, and our 4A and 3A are their 3A

Colin County, where Allen resides, is the wealthiest county in Texas and in the top 10 nationwide.

With that said, I wouldn't say their priorities are misplaced. Who are we to say that another group of people have their priorities wrong. It sounds to me they overwhelmingly voted for this, and they can afford it (unlike most other municipalities and governments in this country). It's called Democratic Process.

Is the stadium lavish and excessive? Yeah, possibly, but define excessive. I just hope someone doesn't go full Liberal retard in this thread and villify people who clearly have their financial house in order and churn out great kids that are ready for society and college (academically and athletically) all in the name of a price tag.

This $60 million is nothing compared to what Allen has done with its Academic side of things. The new Performing Arts Center, Science Labs and overall upgrades on their campus trump the stadium big time.

I say good for Allen. I'm glad they are able to afford it and provide this for their kids and people. It's the God Damn American dream. And for the record, I'm not from Allen.... I'm from a shithole East Texas town called Longview.

Here's a question for you:

Unless you are a current student or alumnus of a school, or unless you have a direct relation associated with the school, who the frick buys season tickets to a college football team?

Both are amateur sports...

Bottom line is that these high schools represent the community, just as many colleges represent their respective communities and states.

For the record... Allen spent $269 million on Academic and Academic Support investments.

I remember in the 90's, there would be around 4,000-4,500+ people attending our game against our main rival. There were only 1500 people in each town.

Anything outside of Longview and Tyler might as well be profiled in the "Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia"

Holy. shite. 7 pages of misinformation and bitching throughout this thread.

Let's start with some facts.

1) The bond election was passed with 63.66% support in the community.

2) It was passed in 2009 for $119.4 million. It was funded via a $.0697/hundred raise in property taxes ($1.4703/hundred to $1.54/hundred). Property taxes from 2002-2007 averaged $1.8603/hundred.

3) $23.3 million went towards the Allen ISD auditorium that was completed in 2011. All of that money has been spent.

4) $36.5 million went towards an Allen ISD transportation, maintenance, and student nutrition center slated to begin construction in September 2012.

5) $59.6 million went towards the stadium and additional parking. Of that money approved, $24.7 million was spent to build the stadium. The rest of that money has not been used yet.

6) In 2008, Allen ISD passed a $219 million bond proposal with 74% approval which allowed Allen ISD to build schools and additions to meet all projected classroom needs. Combined with the 2009 bonds, that is $279 million for academic support in the last 4 years.

7) The old stadium had 7,200 permanent seats, which is appropriate for a school about a 1/3rd of its size. They were renting temporary bleachers that say 7,000 more for $225,000/year.

8) Allen High and Lowery freshman center have a total enrollment of 5,400 students. The Allen Escadrille is the world's largest high school marching band with over 680 members. Getting people in the stands will not be a problem.

9) The new facility also will house a weight room, wrestling practice facility, and indoor golfing facility.

So, to those who say their priorities are screwed up, it would benefit you to do a little (alot in my case) research on what all has been done in the district before or concurrent with the stadium.

Also, I don't understand why posters with thousands of post on a college football forum have the nerve to say that someone who attends a high school football game has no life. I may go see Curtis play in the opener this year, despite having no affiliation whatsoever. Why? Because I enjoy quality football. Some of you idiots flaunt your support for LSU but cannot understand why someone would support their local high school football team? Get a grip. If you don't like high school football games, that is fine, but don't act like you cannot fathom why someone else would go to the games.

If you think it is lame or uncool to go to a high school football game, I would be willing to bet you also go out of your way to tell everyone that you are not on Facebook. We get it man. Not everyone can be as cool as you are.

That's probably the best post you've ever made on here, slackster. I agree with you. When was their old stadium built?

Coach Shows is pushing to build a new stadium for West Monroe. Don't know what the design they are looking at, but I'm sure if Shows has anything to do with it, it will be nice!

This. There is also just a cultural difference. I thought the whole Friday Night Football game thing was weird when I moved to Plano from La. Then, my youngest sister ended up attending Allen when my mom relocated after Katrina. She was on the dance team so it just became normal to go to the games to support her... Then I realized that the whole town was there. Became normal.

As for as academics, Collin County takes care of their schools. The campuses here aren't even comparable to most public schools in La.
