Not to steal from the wonderful Mike and Mike, but to steal from Mike and Mike-

Should the Dunk Contest be replaced? What should it be replaced with?

Idk what it should be replaced with, but I do think it needs a decade-long hiatus.

I mean, there's only so many ways one can dunk a basketball, let's be honest here

Returning to a classic format, the Sprite Slam Dunk will be a two-round event in which the four participants can perform any dunk they choose without time limits. The players will have a maximum of three attempts to complete each dunk in both the first round and the final round. Five judges will score every dunk on a scale of 6 to 10, resulting in a high score of 50 and a low score of 30.

All four competitors will get two dunks in the first round. The two dunkers with the highest combined score for their two dunks will advance to the head-to-head final round. The player with the highest combined score for his two dunks in the final round will be the champion.

A 2 on 2 or 1 on 1 game would be cool

i agree that they need to go back to the old way too.
One idea i had a while back was to have an amateur dunk contest a few weekends before the all star break. The winner of that got to compete in the all star dunk contest. With all the street ballers around, i think it would be pretty interesting to see a non NBA player try to outdo a current "star"

Best shot blockers vs best Dunkers

Dunkers can leave from anywhere but shot blockers have to stay within the charge bubble

Call it chicken

Yea this would be legit. The props and all the crap have really watered the contest down.

That being said, Lavine can straight yoke. Go look at his tape from the Seattle Pro AM. excited to see what he is going to do.

naw

the dunk contest has been a way to display young NBA talent for like 15 years. that's not going to change very quickly

This. People forget, or simply never knew depending upon age, but the dunk contest was not always part of All-Star weekend. It was a revived deal from back in the 70's when it was brought back. I want to say it had been an ABA thing?

So when they brought it "back" in 1984, it was a big deal...everything being seen was new. It was a perfect reflection of the time and the players coming into the league.

Given the slow and defensive nature of basketball at all levels at this point, there doesn't seem to be any reason for a dunk contest any more.

They could start by tweaking to closer to game conditions. As someone else already stated, put a defender/blocker in there, then limit the dunker to no more than 2 steps without a dribble.

The Dunk contest need to be revamped completely.

First, I think it should be 5 guys and a ladder format. The defending champion should only have to dunk on the last round.

Secondly, it should be winner take all, no prize money if you finish 2nd.

Lastly, the scoring should be done by past winners and players, whose identity is secret until the end of the contest, so you can put them in different parts of the arena.
