While I think Donovan had the skill what was he in team chemistry. The team they took I thought did well. I think we are overplaying the expectations of what US Soccer is.

Now I will say once they win the WC or get to a final then expectations should be raised. But as of now, a quarter or knock out round is exactly where they should be expected to be.

I didn't think it was that big of a burn. Lalas likes Donovan and obviously wanted him on the squad. His mindset is like ours on the issue.

I doubt the US gets to a WC final in our lifetimes. We are so far away.

We only made it to the quarters once with our best team ever, our best coach ever, and a young star from California.

It is not the results that are in question. It was the process. The selections were hypocritical, illogical, and based off personal hatred.

Ah, fair enough. I know Lalas is a smartass and it's hard to discern tone from a tweet.

Sorry, I'm an over sensitive frick when it comes to Landon/Klinsmann related issues.

Preaching to the choir. We are united on that front.

I think the WC with Sampson killed everything Arena had built. That 5 midfield tactic was nuts. His explaination was even crazy, (paraphrasing) we will have a power play at all times.

I sometimes think the US is too big to field a great team. As they don't play together growing up etc.

This guy gets it. There's no way that Donovan should have gone to Brazil in 2014. He was a washed up has been.

However, Klinsmann still left out the guy who had the most goals AND assists for the US in 2013 AND the guy who had a goal and assist in the game that clinched qualification against Mexico in 2013. There's no excuse for leaving players of that caliber at home.

Bring those two guys and it's a different tournament for the US.

Besides his diminishing skills at his age, he also decided to skip the World Cup qualifying and watch from home while his teammates practiced and played and fought for their spots.

Then he shows up out of shape for final camp. He thought he was a shoe in and he acted like it

People criticized Klinsmann for his omission while he kept 18 year old Julian Green and inexperienced Yedlin, but Yedlin played as well as anyone for the U.S. In that tourney, and by taking a budding superstar in Green, he blocked Germany from picking him up when he matures into that superstar next World Cup. Besides that, when green did get his chance he promptly shined and showed the skills that are going to be the future of US soccer

Donovan was 31. His diminished skills are light years ahead of some of the options we took. His technical ability, vision, and finishing are not going to be replaced by Chris Wondolowski. Brad Davis is beyond useless in the international game.

What about Timmy Chandler who turned down call-ups? The only difference is that Landon could actually play at a high level.

Shows how much you know. There was a beep fitness test where the players had to run for 15 minutes. Only one player made it the full 15: Michael Bradley (who coincidentally covered the most ground per game in the WC, but sidewalk supporters believe he sucks). The best finisher was Kyle Beckerman. Third was Donovan. I guess everyone else is out of shape and should have been cut.

Bradley and Beckerman are CM or CDM (even though Jurgen continues to try and fit a square peg in a round hole by playing Bradley outside of position). Bradley and Beckerman are in great shape and should be. Apparently, Bradley is an absolute fitness monster and even ran circles around guys at Roma.

and by taking a budding superstar in Green,

He is a great prospect, but budding superstar is absurd. Would you consider Alex Bregman to be a budding MLB superstar?

You probably watch soccer once every four years, which is fine, but do not come in bullshite reasoning. I am not going to tell you how to fight your fights because I do not know shite about it.

Looks like this thread was moved to the gay board.

I should walk away from the discussion #2932342239847 on this subject.

We had far fewer options at RB than we did at whatever position we were looking to play Donovan.

If Jurgen hadn't arbitrarily decided that Donovan was only a forward (despite playing him at the 10 position just a year before), we could have played him in the 10 spot behind the striker. We had zero real #10 options, as evidenced by Bradley being forced to play there. I would say our options there were more limited than at RB where we had Chandler, Fabian, and Yedlin.

Mix could have played there.

Fabian really needed to play on the left side for us, which left just Yedlin and Chandler as RB options.

And Cameron. Even though Mix didn't see a minute during the tourny, I'll humor you and add him to the #10 mix (even though Jurgen still doesn't play him there...). So Yedlin + Cameron + Chandler > Bradley + Mix. Also, Fabian played that entire tournament for us at RB, so I'm not sure what you mean about him needing to play on the left side for us. That said, I like him at left mid for us.
