Just got an alert on my phone saying the Cowboys have signed Dan Bailey to a 7 year contract

I'm sure it's on the cheap and has several outs for Dallas but is it commonplace to sign a kicker to such a long deal?

He's only 25 and one of the top in the game. Also, unlike with other positions, it doesn't cost much if you let a kicker go if he all of a sudden starts to suck

NFL contracts arent guaranteed. Even if he sucks after 3 years, whatever guaranteed money will surely come off the books the first 2-3 years.

I would think kickers are the safest position to give long term contacts to. shite John Kasay was like 42 in his last season

I would disagree just bc kickers can lose it so quickly

Look at Heartley this year

Of course a non-guaranteed contract helps

Yeah there's a big mental aspect in kickers but the good ones stay around a long time

Every NFL contract has the same out

They can cut you anytime that want, and contracts aren't guaranteed

More like Vanderjagt (sp) for the Colts. Dude was awesome, shanked one and lost it forever
