Bobby Cox is a surprise given Atlanta's great reputation for pitching but getting men to pitch better is not the same as handling them optimally. James Click did yet another brief manager study in Between The Numbers-this one looked at how good a manager did deploying pitchers. In his results, Bobby Cox came off as one of the worst in recent decades.

Terry Francona is the most surprising inclusion on this list. Though Boston won a title under him during the time span of the Birnbaum database, it does not give him much credit. It claims that under Francona, the Red Sox underachieved by -96 runs. As far as the database is concerned, the Red Sox success was a triumph of the front office.

Hopefully, tied to a chair while someone punches him repeatedly in the nuts.

It was Mike f'n Mussina. And the game was IN Camden Yards. We already hated the jerk face, but that was just spiteful and mean for no reason. He's a fricking a-hole. I hope he gets hit by a bus.

Oh, what a genius, he took a team of 5-6 Hall of Famers or near HOF'ers to back to back titles. My three year old could have managed the 1993 Blue Jays to a title.

It's statistically based so naturally there are some outliers.

It's some good analysis that makes for great conversation.

I was gonna say Billy Martin was not high enough but its probably right. Ppl forget he took the twins and a's (both teams were shite) to the playoffs.

Great strategic manager imo

I would have loved to see the fight between him and Tommy Lasorda.

Any ranking that puts Ron Gardenhire ahead of Tom Kelly is not just BS, but BS of the highest and greatest order.
