Pretty sad that William Perry wasn't able to be photographed wearing his Super Bowl ring like the rest of the guys were

Also noticed they didn't ask Jim McMahon if he would have done it all over again. I believe he had said a few years ago that he wished he would have played baseball instead

I remember a few threads on here after the '07 BCS game when idiots were claiming LSU could have beaten NFL teams in the 70's-80's. The first reply was about the '85 Bears not allowing them to cross mid-field. Some goofball responded that the Bears didn't have anyone to cover Brandon LaFell and no one that could block Glenn Dorsey.

The difference in size and athleticism really has changed that much. I don't know if the 07 LSU team would be a good example. But I'd wager the 2001 Miami team would kill the 85 bears. Wouldn't even be close.

ETA: I refuse to believe that you actually believe that.

You're underestimating the difference in athleticism and strength and size

It's immense

The 1985 bears had one player over 300 lbs on the entire roster.

Today you see kids coming out of high school to play offensive tackle. Some that are 300 pounds are considered "undersized" or need to fill out.

No NFL team from 1985 could play with an elite college team in 2015. It would be a massacre.

You doubt it? Put most of the starters from the 1985 Bears in this year's NFL combine and they don't even get drafted

Like Willie Gault who ran a personal best 9.8 100 meters , set a world record in the 4 X 100 with Carl Lewis/ Calvin Smith & gained a bronze medal behind
Roger Kingdom in the 110 meter hurdles?

Probably would have Olympic medals if not for the 1980 boycott.

Gault who has set records of 10.8 100 meters( 10.8) & 200 meters ( 21.8) above 45 & clocked at 4.4 at 50? ( T Holiday is the only player with a chance of running with him consistently).

Poor wittle 6'5 275 DE Richard Dent just may get injured against LSU players

They didn't practice / train for the combine but despite that I hear Walter Payton was fairly good( as good as Emmit Smith)despite not having a great 40.

Name me the weak links on the 85 Bears that would get physically overwhelmed by LSU.

The left tackle on the 85 bears was 277 lbs and he was their biggest offensive lineman. I think that would serve a problem against elite college d-lines these days. 1985 was 31 years ago. The change in the size of lineman has been huuuuge in that timeframe. Linebackers and receivers not so much

Listed weight.

But the game was in transition. Before 1978 lineman could not extend / grab defensive linemen ,but actually block them. Shocking huh?

To open up the passing game they were allowed to grab & hold defensive linemen & tackles have subsequently gotten larger . You no longer have to chase Deacon Jones & lightning fast ends when you can actually reach out & hold them to protect Qb's/passing game.

Old blocking rules required quicker more agile linemen. Not big mean who can legally hold.

Offensive tackle with 'listed weights' 20 lbs or so lighter than today is the only supposed weak link that would allow LSU to dominate the 85 Bears?

The whole offensive line was under 277. Their average weight was about 265. That would simply pose a problem against elite d-lines today. Bamas front 7 would rape that offensive line. Rape them

Not just Coke. They ate snickers in the locker room at halftime too. At least the saints did in the early 90s.......

Constant access to Coke and Snickers explains the player weight differences over those time periods IMO.

Yeah

Walter Payton
Willie Gault
Dan Hampton
Richard Dent
Mike Singletary
Dave Duerson
Otis Wilson
Jimbo Covert

NONE of those guys would have been drafted today

That's you. That's what you sound like.

I think you're just freaking with us now.

280 was their ' listed weight' after training camp, two-a-days & puking several times a week to ' trim down' .

By mid season most of these guys were 300 plus & it was a joke with announcers .

" Was he 277 lbs before breakfast or lunch Frank?"( As they all chuckled).

The Redskins " Hogs " was the 1st team to fully embrace the big 300 lb. linemen that the new ' holding' rules encouraged.
